AC/DC sounds on MG50DFX

Hi

I am new to all this having just taken up the guitar. I am trying to achieve a sound as close as possible to the AC/Dc sound on a MG50DFX ( i am playing a Les Paul Custom so I know it's not going to be spot on) so if any one can give a newbie some pointers it would be much appreciated.

Nailing that exact tone, will be quite hard on a MG. I have a plexi ri (1987x) with a SG and it approximates it.

Also, you want Angus' tone or Malcom's ? Lots of songs of AC/DC are Malcom's tone.

If it's Angus', he also uses it's volume pots on the guitar to manage the distortion. With a tube amp you can play clean by hitting the strings lightly and have some distro if you hit them hard. Hard to do with a SS amp.

I think the best I could do is direct to this lad on youtube. Have a decent tone (but too much distortion too beign AC/DC IMO. AC/DC tone don't have lots of preamp distortion, just power tubes driving hard).

Here is the guy, this link is the vid for his amp settings. He says taht it is this setting that gives him the AC/DC tone on his MG. I tend to disagree, i'd put less gain!

Man!! I saw that guy a couple months ago for the first time and I was amazed at how well he does with an MG.

It may not be exactly like AC/DC tone but I think it's close enough... and he has studied Angus's playing extensively so he really has that shit down!!

That guy knows how to get great tone!!

Even though I have DSL 100s and a JCM 800 2203, I'm still a big fan of the MG100HDFX heads.

I recommend you set it for a medium gain level. TREBLE and MIDS at 2-3 (for good smoothness), CONTOUR at 0.

Try that or try what the YouTube AC/DC guy does. I think you'll be pleased.

I just got the MG100dfx combo amp for practice (my main amp is a DSL50 watt head) and I have to say it's been great. I have been using the emulated line out to record direct into my Pro Tools and it sounds awesome. By far the best solid state amp Ive played through.

if it was achievable on that amp then we wouldn't be wasting our money on these $1000-$2000 Marshall heads. The amp to get the real AC/DC tone would be a cranked JTM45 with KT66 tubes for the original stuff. 1959 Super Leads for the later, like Highway to Hell. A JCM800 2203/2204 can get pretty close, the DSL/TSL's, not so much. Any of the high end tube amps can get close to Young brothers' tone but the first two mentioned would be spot on.

Classic rock sounds are probably that amps weakest link. It sounds incredibly harsh and brittle for what you're after. It does pretty good for cleans and Metal, that's about it. It's not really known for being versatile.

I must say that I agree with American Viking on that. This tone, with the "hollow" sound of AC/DC means Plexi + Greenbacks.

But I would surely take note of Cooper comment, this guy knows it's guitar!
