Power Brake Question

Just curious, for all you power brake users out there:

What level do you guys/girls usually run your power brake when playing live?

I've got my first gig tonight with my stock 1959SLP head, its a smaller club gig, not trying to piss the soundman off(even tho he's my friend, haha).

I'm trying to run the amp on the verge of breakup and hit it hard with pedals to get that mid-gain "sweet spot" without destroying the place.

It'd be cool to also hear your amp settings too...

Thanks!

Re: Power Brake Question

I always start with -12, to dial it after a few songs to -9. Succes guaranteed.

There is no given "live" level.

It totally depends on the room size and how many people are in it to soak up sound.

With my 50 watters I usually start at two steps down from no attenuation (any more starts to sound limp) which is -6db. With a 50 watter -6db is almost too quiet for me and is easily buried by drums. Depending on the club I most often bring it up a notch to -3db about halfway into the set. By that point the club usually has a crowd to absorb the stage noise. Rarely does a soundman complain when you compensate volume appropriately.

Let us know how you did.

Re: Power Brake Question

With my 1987x I usually knock it down 2-3 notches and go from there, maybe start by knocking down 4 notches on a 100w and see how you get on.

Have you got any sort of volume/solo boost set up at all?

Re: Power Brake Question

Gig went pretty well. Sound checked at -9 then bumped it up to -6 after the first song. Could have gotten away with another click up but I was getting feedback(see below) I think a little bit more experimentation will help me find the sweet spot.

This is how I run the amp-
Presence 4
Treble 4
Mid 6
Bass 5
Vol 1 7
Vol 2 4

I run an EHX Germanium 4 Big Muff, OD channel is always on. I have it set with gain minimal and volume almost maxed. Started to feedback a bit, but I'm thinking I need to back off high treble vol just a tad. or maybe on the pedal?

Re: Power Brake Question

I set my amps on 10, and with a 100 watt I need it 2 notches from full, and a 50 watt only 1 notch.

Good for you dude, that it worked out. But remember; what now is a good setting is the other day rubbish. Just go with your feeling and noodle a bit. Everytime. No such thing as a golden setting. Too bad I know.

Thats the truth right there.

I've never understood the point of asking peoples settings.

Guitar, PU's, Tubes, Speakers, Cabs, player touch...so much comes into play regardless if you have the same model of amp as the person you are asking. And like you mentioned, change rooms or even fill the room you are currently in with people and you will need to tweak your settings all over again.
