Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
Yep Vintage Modern would do it. But Hendrix use the master of all Plexis, the 1959 SLP

Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
Hand wired and just the normal stock version not hand wired. You would want the hand wired if you had the choice but the stock version would be great too. If you can't afford the Plexi that would be 1k+ then a standard dsl combo would do.

Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
Hendrix used fairly shitty 70's strats. Thats how he gets his main tone and attack. Other than that I've read a lot and seen in old footage what looks to be older Marshall 100w bass heads. Couldnt possibly tell but I'm fairly certain that he was using celestions in most of his cabs. Some sound like he wasnt, but hard to tell. I know of an awesome Pup designer and maker. If you get a hold of me I'll get you info on how to get a hold of him. They are the best pup's I've ever heard(He has designed many models). He nails that hendrix tone with some of his models, given you plug into the right equipment.

Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
For what it's worth, Steve Dawson, who designed the Hendrix Signature amp, is also the designer for the Vintage Modern. Aside from purchasing the Hendrix Signature amp, or purchasing a JTM45/100 and having modifications done to it, I think the VM is the choice for you. Along with the points that were made above, it also comes with the same speakers as were designed for the Hendrix Signature amp. Do you have a chance to try one out?

Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
It hasn't been mentioned, but I get a very good resemblance of his sound out of my DSL. The ash body and vintage noiseless pickups in my Strat are a big part of that of course. Lots of videos of the DSL with Strats on Youtube too where guys are really nailing his sound.

Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
I'd go with his reissue first, but that would be hard to come by most days. I'd then recommend JTM45-100watt head, 1959slpx, and finally, a vintage modern. If you have the money, I'd go for those reissue heads, but if money is tight, then the VM will do.

Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
If you want to nail the sound buy a early Plexi Super Lead.
Hendrix played all kinds of them '66 - '70. He only used the JTM-45/100 very early, and used JMP Super Lead rest of the time. A Super Bass would also work fine. None of the RI amps will nail the sound the way an original Plexi do. |

Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
I appreciate you guys not nailing me too hard on that. I meant he used the 70's style strats (you can tell by the big headstock) that fender applied in 65'. Ive always heard them refered to 70's sytle even though they made them all the way to 1980. My point was that the gweets he was using were the ones that fender unfortunately started using "quality control" on. Even though today they are the milestone for tone, fender was cutting back a lot on quality around this period. Thanks for the clear up sojatriani. Thought we were all here to help eachother, not bust nuts.

Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
I thought it was a typo, Stanley, but I see what you mean.
When I started playing guitar in the early 70's (creak...groan..) the hip stuff was "pre-CBS." Anything else was bleh. I got my 73(?) Strat in 1978, and thought I was settling for what I could afford...a 3d-hand sunburst, w/rosewood and that ugly bullet sticking up. Well, I still like it. As for Hendrix sound...gee, which one? He got a million sounds. I think most any valve Marshall with Celestions can be the basis of some Hendrix variation. What would Jimi do with what's available today? |

Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
Yes, the handwired RI is an exact recreation of the first amp he used in '66.
He used many others later. Sorry to say, but none of the RI models I've tried sounds close to the originals. Last edited by janarn; 03-04-2009 at 03:35 PM. |

Re: Which amp for a Hendrix sound?
One more thing to keep in mind: Hendrix did love to experiment with his equipment, so modification to original equipment is something to keep in mind. You probably won't find THE Hendrix tone, but you can come close with those old plexi super leads. Reissue plexi heads will also get you close, but in most cases you won't get exact either. Strat, plexi, and 4x12 cab with celestions will get you close. Hope this helps.
