I have a JCM2000 DSL 201, 20 watt, 1x12 combo and I can't find crap for info on these amps!
I really wanna know more, and I have the feeling I should keep it for a long time because of it's lack of info. I just wonder if these things are either really rare, or were a fluke and they stopped makin em for a reason. I do know the thing CRANKS for a 20watt, and it has great tone. I am gonna get some EL34 groove tubes, and new ECC83's just to freshen it up cause im sure they are in dire need of replacement. The amp was made in 1999. I believe I have number 2 made also, the part number is M-1999-41-0002-B. ANY info that can be offered would be great! Thanks |

Re: DSL 201 Combo, Rare or what?
It uses EL84's like the DSL401 not EL34's. They are pretty much exactly same as the 401 as far as I know accept the 401 has the OD2 channel option and they were discontinued around 2003 I think. http://www.marshallamps.com/handbooks/pdf/dsl201.pdf this link should have pretty much all the info out on the amp.
Cheers, Alex. |

Yeah, thanks, ment to say EL84's. oops. Either way, I thank you for the info.
I just want to know if anyone else has one of these amps, or what. I love the thing, its a good practice amp, used it in a bar and it was almost too loud when I had it in the sweet spot! |

Re: DSL 201 Combo, Rare or what?
A few guys have them. They are harder to come by than the 401's. They aren't exactly the same. Most people who have them absolutely love them. If you haven't played through an extension cab, give it a try. Much better than the combo alone.
401's have two speaker outs, and a selector to go from 16 to 8 ohms. They also have a footswitch jack for the Reverb. Biggest difference (aside from the wattage) is the 201 only has two channels - Clean and OD. 401's have a Clean/OD1/OD2. The OD2 is the same as the OD on a 201; OD1 is somewhere in between. I never really use OD1 though......OD2 is pretty nice. These amps LOVE to have NOS glass in them. They respond very well to it.

Re: DSL 201 Combo, Rare or what?
I love mine, its really punchy on the low end. I play a lot of Doom/stoner Fuzz stuff, and it handles it sooo good. I really wanna hook it up to a 2x12 or even a 4x12 sometime.
Actually took the amp apart today and found it already has brand new j&j tubes all around, but still, I want more natural fuzz. *I also electrocuted myself on the amp today too, I forgot to discharge it! I literally touched the board with my thumb and instantly felt like someone punched me in the side of the head and was right on my ass on the floor. Worst feeling ever! Remember to discharge your amps people! It could have been wayy worse! Found a video on discharging too, if anyone's interested. Discharging.wmv - YouTube |

Re: DSL 201 Combo, Rare or what?
Yeah, so I was working on the amp yesterday and had a little bit of an accident, I forgot to discharge my amp.
So pretty much I went to reach in and touched the wire coming off the capacitor and yeah it was like someone punched me in the head and I went on my ass faster then a sack of bricks with no gravity. Man did that hurt! Got a nice white burn now to show my battle scar. haha. So rule of thumb people, DISCHARGE your amp before taking it apart by simply letting it warm up all the way BEFORE you unplug it! This could have been way worse concidering I have heart problems. haha |

Re: DSL 201 Combo, Rare or what?
Its good to have a warning now and then. Im glad you are ok. But those high voltages can stay for a long time. The only safe course is to discharge the caps using wire with insulated alligator clips, prefferably through a resistor,, then check with a meter

Re: DSL 201 Combo, Rare or what?
Thanks guys haha. Yeah, got it all back together without any problems. I had to put a new jack in, cause my daughter kept playing with it and it wouldn't work unless I jiggled it. haha. Had to test out my new Boss ME-50, I tell ya, the reverb from that sounds sooo good, makes the Blues sing for sure!
