Question JCM 900 MKIII vs SLX???

which would be better for hardcore punk / thrash and why? I am looking into getting an slx for the gain but seems like a lot of people say its muddy and the mkiii is better so I want to know why and if anyone has a side by side comparison playing rhythm would be great.

I've never heard or played an SL-X in person, but, with my MKIII, I can get the tones I believe you're looking for. I run the "Gain Sensitivity" knob at 0 and boost the front end with an Xotic EP Booster. Run it into a 1960A with V30s. I also have Duncan Distortion/Dimarzio Super Distortion equipped guitars. It'll get you there!

Re: JCM 900 MKIII vs SLX???

I prefer the MKIII but the SL-X is better for metal and hardcore especialy modern variants. on a side note if you didn't like the DSL 100 you likely won't like the SL-X or JVM's as they're close in tone on the gainy side and the SL-X lead is what the lead2 on the DSL is based and voiced around. Imo for hardcore and metal the TSL and DSL's are the right amps. I play 80's influenced classical metal/prog/shred and hardcore so the MKIII is perfect for me.

Re: JCM 900 MKIII vs SLX???

My understanding of the two in a nutshell:

MkIII: tone rich (hot-rodded JCM800)
SLX: High Gain (all tube, 4 gain stages)

Between the two, the MkIII wins just about every time. It's a breeze to add gain to an amp. Adding tone is a different story.

Re: JCM 900 MKIII vs SLX???

from videos I've seen I like how it sounds but in person have no clue. I sold my DSL 50 for the distortion sounding too digital. I hear the SLX sounds less digital compared to the DSL. van anyone prove this have videos or mp3 clips comparing them or just of slx playing rhythm? I saw the video of the SLX vs JCM800KK and I like how they sounded similar.

Re: JCM 900 MKIII vs SLX???

The only slx I have ever played was not well. So I cant speak intelligently on the subject. I love my mkIII its my favorite only second to the 2205/10. For the money spent MKIII wins hands down...

Re: JCM 900 MKIII vs SLX???

The SL-X has more control over the distortion levels than the MkIII IMO.

I've had both, I prefer the SL-X & voted accordingly, but there is VERY little to choose between them, either will do the job tbh.

Re: JCM 900 MKIII vs SLX???

Yeah another reason why im going for the SLX is that I used to have the 2502 MKIII JCM 900 2x12 that sounded like crap. even after being serviced by a professional ....but I read the combo doesn't compare to the MKIII heads?

How long ago was that? (I'm thinking worn capacitors. Quite possible for a 20y old combo)
