Re: boost for class 5??
MXR GT-OD (same as the MXR Classic OD and MXR ZW-44).
Good enough for me.

I personally don't own one, but have heard good things about this:

Psionic Audio. This is the same company - or more importantly, same guy (Lyle Caldwell) - that popularized all the Class 5 mods discussed in depth over @ the MLP forums. Supposedly makes some sick pedals - IIRC, The Edge uses 1 or 2 Psionic stompers.

Re: boost for class 5??
I've used the MXR Classic OD - great cheap stompbox (and really, 2 MXR ODs in one, if you rip it open & flip the internal switch). Currently, my main clean-ish boost is a MXR Custom Badass Modified O.D., with the "Jekyll" side of a Visual Sound Jekyll&Hyde used from time to time as well.

Re: boost for class 5??
I've got a lot of boost pedals on my board that I use with the Class 5. My pedals are set up something like this: PolyTune --> Xotic EP Booster --> Moen Univibe clone --> Boss GE-7 EQ (clean boost) --> Ibanez TS-9 --> Boss MD-2 --> Digitech FX65 Stereo Chorus --> GarageTone Axle Grease Delay. If I just want clean boost, the EP Booster is my first choice or the GE-7 if I want clean boost with a little EQ. The TS-9 is good by itself or you can hit it with the EP or the GE-7 for more break-up. The Boss Mega Distortion can sound brutal, but it can also do a very decent job as a boost - with a separate gain boost and distortion control plus the EQ/bass boost concentric pot there's a lot of control over your tone.

Re: boost for class 5??
I use a TS-9 with a Monte Allums "Tri-Gain" mod (Monte Allums Mods - Individual Pedal Mods). The "Didoe Lift" option gives a nice, driving boost. The stacked LEDs on this mod give a pretty good boost also.

Re: boost for class 5??
I gigged my class 5 a couple of weeks ago. I had a MIJ Boss ds-1 and a Boss GE-7 on my pedal board. The GE7 was the best boost. I tried the DS-1 at sound check and it sounded like crap, so I used the GE7 for boost all night. I have also used a ts-9 clone and an older MIJ SD-1 with good results.
I picked up a mxr bad ass '78 distortion and replaced my DS-1 on my board with it, but have not tried it in front of the C5 yet.

I do enjoy the 78 Distortion w/ my C5 combo, but at higher volumes, it will cause the C5 to fart out (most any mid to high gain distortion pedal will). You can increase clean headroom & reduce some of the high volume farts from using a dirt box by swapping the EL84 for an EL84M ("military spec"). I bought a Sovtek EL84M to try in my combo. The new tube did darken up the amp a little, although pedals & some preamp tube changes brought the high end back. Amp did stay semi-clean (more so that stock, anyway) up to about the 12:00 point on the volume - and the C5 cranked was not quite as crunchy on it's own. BUt an OD boost w/ gain up a bit more than usual retained the traditional C5 cranked sound. I swapped the EL84M for another EL84 over the weekend just to experiment - but if I were headed into a situation where high volume & a fuzzy dirt box were needed, I would gladly dump the 84M back in. The '78 Distortion is a nice pedal, though - esp like how even if the gain is all the way up, you can clean up the tone with your pick attack or guitar volume knob. VERY touch sensitive distortion and a definite 70s/80s vibe. Nu-metal is not it's wheelhouse, but solid, musical '70s hard rock to '80s Sunset Strip sounds are its forte in spades. It is NOT one of those high gain stompers that fully saturate your guitar sound - bad playing technique will not be masked by this pedal. In my various gear set up combinations, the '78 always acts as my pseudo-VH tone in a box. And it likes to have the Custom Badass Modified OD hammering it as a boost, too.

Re: boost for class 5??
I tend to not use any boost for my C5, and find it sounds better this way because it doesn't fart out. I do run an RC boost but it's at unity volume, and is really just a post-distortion EQ in my setup. Been considering using the SHO at the end of the chain though, with just enough volume to be a smidge louder.

Re: boost for class 5??
that is strange for me. BOR amd Class5 with a les paul try just the booster.
cruchy crunch. then overdrive with a tone low and the up. till you get the sweet spot. also have the input stage mod 1Mohm, caps adjusted. |

When you say "caps adjusted"...I get what you mean, but can you elaborate? Referring to the Lyle Caldwell/Psionic Audio mods over @ the MLP forums? Still intrigued about those mods - thinking I may have a local tech do it up for me.

Re: boost for class 5??
It certainly takes pedals well. My OCD works great but i think the Fulltone Full Drive 2 is one of the best tone shapers i've tried. It is a very versatile pedal. Clean boost to good overdrive and many tones in between.

Re: boost for class 5??
99% of the time I just plug straight into the C5, such a sweet tone. C5 volume at 1 o'clock, Bass at 6, Mid and Treble cranked, using the guitar volume and tone control a lot.
However, yesterday I tried my Fulltone ’70 fuzz with my new LP and the C5 and loved it. Crazy tones at a lower volume, lots of big fuzz, pretty responsive to guitar volume knob changes.
