When I landed here... I only knew the JCM800
When I landed here...
I only knew the JCM800 and it's highly mythical very near relatives I also had seen DSL's all over the place and even played through a few But now I'm finding out about all kinds of Marshall "stuff" Like what's this: Valvestate 8100..? Era:____? Sound Characteristics:____? Circuit Design:___? It's kind of a homely little guy (actually down right ugly) Anybody who's got experience with this head please relay "your story" for my entertainment (thank you in advance) I'm actually kind of getting into Marshall's "rich history" of Boom and Bust amps Some live on in Glorious Mythical Songs of praise - others die horrible lonely dusty bottom of the rack deaths

Re: When I landed here... I only knew the JCM800
well tonaly they're highly compressed. so they do sound good but they're limited in dynamic range. They won a forum blind tone test compared to all the other BIG Marshalls a couple years ago. circa 19905 i think?
they can get VERY aggressive, very similar in feel to a 5150 with that marshall upper mid accentuation. Pretty nice cleans just crunch was kinda.....meh.

Re: When I landed here... I only knew the JCM800
Era: Around 1989 - 1993(?)
Sound: Very "abrasive" and pretty modern sounding. Circuit design: Solid state power amp, single tube preamp. Tommy Victor from Prong used one As well as Chuck Schuldiner from Death (everything after 1993) I don't know how well it handles "classic" Marshall sounds. I know the 2nd generation Valvestate head (VS100) handles those tones very well. If you want a cheap heavy, thrash, and death metal amp, the 8100 or the 8200 (100w/100w stereo amp with stereo chorus, not bridgable) is the way to go.

Re: When I landed here... I only knew the JCM800
yeah i meant 93.. still would have been off though lol. Yeah those are the main "known" bands that use/d them. i had an 80/40 or whatever. stereo chorus. sounded awesome and yeah not a crunch amp. great cleans and uber metal tones though i know many people that didn't think it had enough gain......crazy bastards too....
