Post Valvestate 8240 vs. JCM 2000 DSL 401

Just vote what amp you like more of course think the Valvestate is modded. Dont think about how they sound on stage but only about how it sounds in a music or bed room.

Re: Valvestate 8240 vs. JCM 2000 DSL 401

If you spent as much time practicing as you do worrying about what other people think of your gear you would have an easier time figuring out this question on your own.

Have you played the DSL401? If yes, then which one do YOU like more? If not, what is the reason you have targeted this amp as a possible replacement for your current one?

If you want an honest answer, I think that if you were to buy the DSL401 that you'd most likely enjoy it for about a week - frankly the most you will actually enjoy from it is being able to tell your friends and fellow forum members that you have tubes in your amp. This will be followed by your disappointment that your idol, Slash, does not in fact play the same "tube amp" as you, and you will be right back at the start asking other people what THEY think. Does this sound like fun?

Really, man, you're driving yourself crazy for no other reason than worrying what others think. You have spent a great deal of time talking about how much you like your current rig ... so what's the problem?

Truth is, you have it in your mind that unless other people approve of your gear then somehow you are failing to live up to potential. Since that's the case, you will never be satisfied unless you either change your way of thinking, or simply save up to purchase the same amp that Slash plays (VM/SJ). Minds are a hard thing to change so I'd start saving.

For what it's worth, you seem like a good kid...don't take offense to what I suggested as I'm only trying to give you honest advice.

Just my nickel's worth.

I play more time then when i talk about my gear.
I never played one, and i wanna know more and maybe buy that amp for 2 reasons : 1: I saw a guy on youtube getting great slash tones with it. 2: Its an amp i can buy, a lot of marshall all tube amp are second hand over 1000 €

I know slash plays a JCM slash and a VM but i cant buy those amps. And i also like to play some rock n roll songs, or jeff beck.
Because i never played a DSL 401 i wanna hear what you guys think about it. AND NO IT DOESENT SOUND FUN .
I like my current rig but i wanna make it better.
I also wanna make my own sound, I wanna make a slash sound with my own influences.
And i think i will kike the amp im sellin some epiphone guitars now.

Re: Valvestate 8240 vs. JCM 2000 DSL 401

I saw some videos on youtube and my impression is now that the dsl 401 is a little bitlike an epiphone guitar vs a gibson and the valvestate sounds like the Gibson here. there is more depth in the valvestate's tone.

Re: Valvestate 8240 vs. JCM 2000 DSL 401

dude, you really need to try these amps rather than listen on youtube... no offense to you but all valvestates ive tried sound like ass, all fizzy tonewise. get to your local gear shop man and try some amps out! just make sure you tell the seller what u want, coz playing a bluesbreaker aint gonna do notthin for you tonewise coz its not gainey enough for you

My man, you are on the right track w/what you said at the end there! Taking bits and pieces of what you admire from others and incorporating it into our own style/tone is precisely what you want to be doing.

I am not trying to discourage you from getting the DSL, but I'm not so sure it's a huge step up from what you already have. And like you pointed out, you like the current rig but want to make it better. Ok here is my suggestion:

Keep your current amp but purchase a better overdrive/distortion pedal. There is a product by Carl Martin called the Plexitone, and I can tell you from experience that it's about the best pedal on the market for putting yourself in the Slash ballpark - and I mean right in the ballpark.

Doing this will give you two advantages:

1) you can improve your current rig with a far smaller investment than buying a new amp sight unseen. Even with a good deal, a new amp is a hell of a lot of money to spend just to satisfy a tube craving ... especially one you aren't sure about.

2) while enjoying your current rig even more than you do now, you can save up to buy the amp that you really want. Yes, the JCM800 / VM / SJ are more expensive - but tone chasing can be a very expensive habit. Saving your money and targeting the amp that you really want (even if more expensive) is going to save you a tremendous amount of not only money, but headaches in the long run.

Just a little patience...yeah yeah....

Re: Valvestate 8240 vs. JCM 2000 DSL 401

Vintage...dude...Valvestate vs tube Marshall...no comparing the two. Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of folks need to play solid state because it's affordable and not a lot of maintenance involved...but there is no replacing the sound of an all tube amp.

Now...I commented on your other thread with my recommendation. Bottom line...sounds to me like you need to find a 401 that you can play and see if you like it. Another option would be to look into finding a vintage modern combo and try it out. Especially for Slash tone...that should get you close.

Again, I love my DSL 401, but it's only one of four marshalls I own and the other three are all tube heads...

Very flexible pedal. Two different modes (crunch/high gain) plus a clean boost. Will take you from a slight blues break up to a high gain (think 1980's) metal tone. I say this as a guy who isn't very fond of using pedals - but for your situation, I think it's a very good option to have on the table.

If you like the sound of an overdriven Plexi (which you do), but can't afford one yet, the Carl Martin Plexitone will get you the closest.
