JCM2000 DSL 401 Effects Loop

I just bought a previously owned DSL 401 and the effects loop does not seem very effective. Seems like sound should be interrupted if I patch a cable into the return? Any tips/hints? It also has very light buzz on clean channel with all my guitars (various Gibsons, Ricks, Hofners, Hagstrom, etc, etc) that is not present in my modeling amp. Any thoughts? Any other tips? I am new to this amp (my first Marshall) after using Ampeg V2s turned up all the way in the 70s.

what effects are you using? if it's distortion, EQ, or anything that pushes gain you're better off putting those in front of the amp anyway.
don't let this turn you off to Marshalls though. this thing could've been used pretty hard and not taken care of internally. you never know. you should trade up for the DSL100!

Re: JCM2000 DSL 401 Effects Loop

First off, thanks for the quick response. Very nice. I had hoped to put my Digitech RP-1 or some of my rack effects in the loop for chorus, digital verb, delays, etc.

Parallel, huh? Hmmm...

Re: JCM2000 DSL 401 Effects Loop

What it means is that the dry signal always goes through, and you mix in as much as you want of the wet, using the FX knob on the amp.

But it means you cant get an all wet signal, and it is stated that keeping the pure direct signal path for the dry is the advantage of this.

To use the loop effectively, you need relatively high levels on your effects units, and to maximise the amount of effect on the box, eg., you might turn the delay level up to max, instead of using 30-50% as you normally would.

I find it works OK, but I dont use the loop for much other than EQ
