A lot of noise on a 2210

Brought home my "new" old 2210 today, got it on ebay. Plugged it in & the first thing I noticed was some of the pots were scratchy. Secondly, it's making a very loud "whoooshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" noise, almost like ocean waves but continual and steady.
I'm taking it in to my tech tomorrow but was just curious if the experts on here had any ideas as to what may be causing this sound.

No expert but is it plugged into a receptacle with a computer, fluorescent light, or anything else like that?

Yeah, but it's not humming...my 900 (up for sale) plugged into the same outlet is dead quiet.

I'm just gonna take it in and have my guy give it a going-over.

Thanks man

That's funny... You apparently know what a whore I am for 900's. Now I have to ask: What kind of 900 is it?

No worries...I'll find a buyer for it. Main concern right now is getting this 800 straightened out.

Interesting how many members encounter problems with ebay amps don't deal with the seller. Hope it's nothing serious and it gets worked out without too much more of an investment.

Re: A lot of noise on a 2210

Hey Marshall users,

I'm a new member here and thought I'd get community active and stuff.

I've only just started trying to reduce noise along the signal chain as I've started recording, and I replaced the preamp valve in my VS102R with a Groovetube 12AX7R. (The thing that came with it was an Ei Yugoslavian 12AX7)

Putting in a new valve has certainly cleaned up my sound! The persistent "fffffffff" noise is gone, and I'm left with very acceptable slight hum that I'm assuming is unavoidable...unless anyone wants to tell me different?

So what I'm asking is, will there always always be a slight (sometimes reassuring) hum from my amp Or can more be cut out by changing something other than valves?

Re: A lot of noise on a 2210

Thanks for the input, guys. I was figuring the tube are probably in need of replacement.
It's going to my amp tech later today or tomorrow.
The 900 has been sold, but I need to change out the boxes on the 2 heads, as the 900 box is in much better condition than the 800. Should be a straight fit, no?

It's a high gain amp and like a muscle car it will rumble some but nothing to be concerned with after all once you hit the strings no one will hear that bit of noise anyway.

A gate is something you could try but I prefer an ungated tone myself. The trade off in tone is well worth the little bit of noise, or rumble.

Re: A lot of noise on a 2210

I like the muscle car analogy, that works for me. My problem has merely changed. It no longer hisses on standby with no inputs, that's been reduced to a mere hum that I'd expect from a high-powered beast like the VS102R.

Now I've noticed that the instant I put a cable of any sort in, the hiss returns. I'm using mid-market cables - one of the Planet Waves springy gripping cables but not with gold-tips - and I'm fairly confident it's not them causing the noise. I've also tested the stubby pedal-to-pedal connectors, and they were noisy too, which made me think it's the input jack on the amp being hissy.

My question to Marshall forumites is this: is the instrument input jack on my amp liable to be a source of noise (only when it's got something plugged into it) or am I chasing a Nirvana of quietness that's just unattainable?

Re: A lot of noise on a 2210

Input jacks are another thing that should be inspected and cleaned with electrical contact cleaner first. Then check the solder to ensure adequate contact.

They can definitely be a noise source.

Re: A lot of noise on a 2210

I appreciate your help, Steelhorse. Your words will ensure my amps internals get a thorough looking over in coming days.

I've been playing over 12 years and literally only just got hip to the electronics behind the sound - probably because I've only recently realised I'm going to be playing for the rest of my life so might as well let it turn into a dizzying obsession..
