Do you prefer bright or dark amp?

Hey guys!

Got a poll for ya!

Do you prefer bright kind of amps like Plexi (bright input) or 2203/2204, etc.
OR
Do you prefer dark amps like Jubilee, 2210/2205, etc.

Whats your opinion on that?

Re: Do you prefer bright or dark amp?

I changed my mind on that... Before, I was rolling off highs, etc. But now, I'm starting to prefer brighter amps/tones.

+ That way, you can always remove some brightness with the guitar tone knob.

Re: Do you prefer bright or dark amp?

I tend to like things a little darker. My Plexi Reissue and 6100 are both darker than my JMP 2204 and JCM 800 2203X. The 2203X is by far the brightest of the four, but very articulate.

Mixing heads with the same guitar or two different guitars with the same head and being creative can generate massive rhythm tracks. Bright and dark can really work well together.

Re: Do you prefer bright or dark amp?

make no mistake i as a metal player have darker tone but i prefer brighter tones it makes me tighter because my mistakes are shown so i go as bright as i can go with a good sound for the application.

Sometimes that's not bright at all, lol.

2210/2205 is a JCM 800...

I tend to like brighter I suppose because it seems easier to tone it down.

Re: Do you prefer bright or dark amp?

I definitely like my 800 bright, but not screeching or ear piercing. But I do run a treble booster.
I go back and forth on the EQ, though. Sometimes I turn all the EQ knobs off except the bass, then hit that with the Beano and it has a cool deep, dark sound with a little bluesy growl to it.
But the last time I lit in, it was kinda bright-ish, and I like it.

My 2210 was modded for a dark sound, and I loved it.
Recently I'm more into brighter amps for a reason I can't recall....

Re: Do you prefer bright or dark amp?

Bright. I want the amp to relay all the subtleties of what my fingers are doing on my Strat. But I also want it to sound big and full. Hence...years of playing Marshalls.

Re: Do you prefer bright or dark amp?

In general I prefer the bright side of amps, but that doesn't mean I am not using darker tones. It's just another kind of dynamics, that you can add to your music.
Just listen to Mark Tremonti on the Alter Bridge records. Bright and dark tone each on it's own, or blended. "the ghost of days gone by" on AB3 is a perfect example, starting with federesque brightness diving deep into the darkness of the recto.

Re: Do you prefer bright or dark amp?

Well, I own a JMP 2204, so brighter. But there are several variables that signify tone of any particular amp, such as which tubes one chooses for the pre-amp and power amp section, settings of the amp, and then seperate from the amp, like which particular speakers are being used, which pickups are loaded in your guitar, etc.

I like both especially when using a bright and a dark amp at the same time.

Re: Do you prefer bright or dark amp?

Bright. It's a lot easier to remove treble with a tone knob then to walk to your amp and turn the treble down in the middle of a song.

It also makes for a sound that cuts, and let's all my shitty playing be heard.

A bright amp - Because you can alway darken your sound with the tone knob.

Re: Do you prefer bright or dark amp?

Whichever I am in the mood for...If using my wah, I go dark so there is a huge contrast when I kick the pedal on. When I am playing clean with my Strat, I go for kinda bright, but deep bass.
