Need help selecting amp to use with Roctron Prophesy 2
I have not picked up a guitar in 20 years but received a Vintage PRS Custom 24 as a gift recently. I also have a Rocktron Prophesy 2 that seems to want to output in stereo so I assume I need a 2 channel amp. I will also be getting a '59 Les Paul reissue soon.
The amp will never leave my house and does not need to produce great volume as I would like to preserve what hearing I have left. I would consider a combo or head/single cabinet. Cost is not such a concern as I do not want to upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. I would like to get it right the first time. Thanks for helping a noob Paul |

If price is not important, how about one of the handwired series? The 1974X is 18 watts.

That is a sweet amp. I listened to it at youtube.
With the Prophesy outputing in stereo would it be possible/better to get an amp that seperated the channels to different speakers? |

You would probably be best served with a rack type power amp. Marshall has the EL84 20/20 which I've heard good things about, but never heard in person.
I use a Peavey Classic 50/50 for my stereo rig and it always sounds great, regardless of the volume.

I don't know any stereo tube heads or combos. I think there is a stereo (hybrid) AVT model and some non-marshall transistors... ... but would I plug those fine guitars of yours into one of these? don't know... are you sure you need to go stereo?

I am actually think rack mount now for the amp. The Marshall 20/20 is looking good if I can find one to try. If I get a cabinet I can always add a standard head leter for more options. The Rocktrom manual does not even show a connection diagram for other than stereo. I am assuming that some of the effects are time delayed and want stereo.

Re: Need help selecting amp to use with Roctron Prophesy 2
Nice Find. I didn't catch that.
I think I will try to locate a 20/20 and I need help picking a 4X12 cabinet that allows for a stereo connection and would be good with a head that I might go ahead and get now as well. What head/cabinet would you guys recommend knowing that I would like to crank the tubes and not my blowing away the house? Also keeping in mind the cabinet needs to be able to serve double duty. You guys are helping me work through this any many heads are much better than my thick skull! Thanks again. |

Re: Need help selecting amp to use with Roctron Prophesy 2
Hi,
You came to the right place for advice. There are guys here that know more about gear than anywhere else. As for your stereo idea, you are correct of course that to get the most out of delay and other effects, you need stereo. I just use two amps, both combos in the new VM series. But for you it sounds like a great 4x12 cab may work. Now days cabs come wired for stereo. The VM heads are really fine and come with the more modern EL 34 tubes or the old school 66 tubes-those are sweet. But to make it simple, the stereo cab will do it for you. Just get good speakers, at low volume the 25 watt greenbacks still work great. If you crank it the vintage 30s are the ticket. If you have not played in some time, a lot has changed. But you will be glad to be into it again. Welcome back and I hope you find a fantastic setup. Great forum Mike Sicowitz |

Re: Need help selecting amp to use with Roctron Prophesy 2
I called and tried to order an EL84 20/20 and the dealer called the Marshall rep and was told they are discontinued.
They are still listed as current on the website. Does anyone know if it's just the US where they are discoed? I found places online to buy them in the UK. Would those models work in the US? Is the 1960 cabinet the model of choice? |

Re: Need help selecting amp to use with Roctron Prophesy 2
I was out lurking and picked up a new (floor model) 1974X for $1299. It had been ordered for a customer that changed his mind. They said it had been in the store for a year and everyone loved it but nobody bought it. The said it had never had a problem with the transformer and it has a full warranty. The didn't have the extension cabinet so now I'm wondering how it would sound. It does sound really nice. Good call by the member that suggested it.

Hi,
Great score, that was the best amp I heard in all of 2008. If you don't need a ext cab screw it. Todays house PAs will make it sound like a handwired stack. Mike |

Re: Need help selecting amp to use with Roctron Prophesy 2
I like this amp so much I decided to go for the cabinet. I may have a problem though. I bought it at GC and they ordered the cab so I hope it matches. The one I have is a GC exclusive and the cloth is Salt and Pepper.

Re: Need help selecting amp to use with Roctron Prophesy 2
Hi,
I hope it works out. I stay away from GC. Although it it a great place to try new stuff, if I like something I work out a deal with an old buddy at his old school music store. He has so many return customers that the guy is busy all day. I guess I'm lucky because a lot of guys have no choice but GC. And some guys at GC are player so they know things, but the pressure to buy and other things is a turn off to me, maybe it's just me. I can remember when there was a dozen good stores in the Milwaukee area, now there's one and GC. Mike |
