Where does the JCM900 "MK3" fit it?
Hello,
Regarding the JCM900 series, I know there are Dual Reverb models and SL-X models. JCM900 Table But, can someone tell me where the JCM900 "MKIII" fits in? Is it a re-issue of some sort?

Re: Where does the JCM900 "MK3" fit it?
it's meant to be a modified 800 series with the added gain of a nice OD but, it's circuit differs. it's tone IS similar imo though. think of it as an all tube amp with a built in OD pedal.
it's far more sought after than the DR's because if this and similar to the SL-X. the SL-X is closer to the basic circuit but, adds a tube gain stage instaed of diodes for the boost and it's a more darkly voiced amp . the SL-X is the most sought after but, personaly i would take an MKIII. that and a nice 86 2205/2210 are my two amps of choice that i'm looking for as i type this. it was alsoa short run from 90-92 |

I've tried all 3 models, and I'm with you diessect, the MKIII is the best.
I tried the SL-X yesterday for the 1st time. It was pretty cool, but I think I would stick to the MKIII

I have a MKIII and I love it. MKIII's are hardly mentioned because they only were produced for a couple of years.

Re: Where does the JCM900 "MK3" fit it?
Thanks guys, I didn't know where to put the mk3. Maybe I overlooked the Marshall site, where I only found the DR and SL-X in the JCM900 section.

Re: Where does the JCM900 "MK3" fit it?
$5-600 around here. Forget Fleabay...DR's are asked at stupid prices like $800 and I see them locally at $4-500 all day long. C/L is usually the place to look.

Re: Where does the JCM900 "MK3" fit it?
To me, all of the JCM900 amps have merit - DR, SL-X, MKIII. I've played through them all, but the only 900 I own is the MKIII. Roll the gain (diodes) back to zero and you have classic JMP Marshall. No BS, just tubes with classic crunch.

Re: Where does the JCM900 "MK3" fit it?
If the glide ratio is an inverse proportion to the quality of the amp, NOTHING will glide better than a DR other than a Peavy.

Re: Where does the JCM900 "MK3" fit it?
The Mk 3 was the 1st run of the 900 series. It had EL 34s whereas the slx and dual reverb had 5881-6l6 power tubes. The Mk3 is basically a 1 chnl amp that had 2 master volumes that you could set differently. It also only had 3 preamp tubes, so you'd get less gain outta these guys compared to the 4 preamp tubes the later 2 900 series amps had. I actually plugged into a MKIII a few days ago in a GC. I didn't crank it enough to enjoy it, but off the bat, was kinda not impressed. It seemed a bit thin and not real ballsy or full. They wanted 599 for it, not bad really. Who knows how much servicing it would need, the knobs were all staticky, the tubes were prob ancient too. I tried a dual reverb 900 once that sounded kinda good. I like that that one gives you seperate gain, volume and reverb for each chnl- alot more versatile. I play a dsl50, a vintage modern2266 and an 84 2205 jcm 800. I would like to add a 900 in someday-why not one of every series right? Amp junkies!!!!!!!!

Re: Where does the JCM900 "MK3" fit it?
Hello all. New to the site, first post. I LOVE my MKIII 2500. Did a few things to make her look different then the rest. Let me know what you think. I just Bought a 76 100w Super Lead 4 hole. Its the pre change over I.E it has the toggles and gold piping no corner caps and what not. So the 900 has been taking a rest as of late. lol.

They used the same casing for 50 and 100 watters, or did you just do that yourself?

Re: Where does the JCM900 "MK3" fit it?
Same for both. The two outer holes have plastic covers over the holes. It's a 1990 900 mkIII, 50 watt. The first year they made them. Had the extra gain diode bypassed. And the bright caps I think there called removed. Great amp tech here near Detroit named Dean Zink did the mods. I also installed blue LED strips hidden in the inside front of the head. That's the blue you see in the pix. Wired to a battery pack and toggle in the rear. Looks much much better in person.

Re: Where does the JCM900 "MK3" fit it?
I have a 2501 MKIII 1x12 50 watt combo.
It's a KILLER amp. It's the perfect Grab & Go combo. It's lighter & smaller than my JCM800 4210 combo and sounds every bit as good. You can plug in an extension cab if you want. I sold my DSL50 after getting the MKIII. Sounded a lot better to my ears. Here's a pic with my MKIII sitting on top of my JCM800. You can see how much smaller it is. It still sound huge. It's all I use at rehearsal.
