JMP 2204 - AC/DC Sound
Hey guys,
just wanna ask what kind of tubes you recommend for a nice crunchy late 70s AC/DC Angus sound? Playing a 79`2204 and a 1960BX Cab. And all I need now are some proper tubes. currently there are JJ`s Ecc 83 in the preamp but I really don`t know how old they are.... The EL 34, I have no idea what brand they are, no lettering on them.... Thanks for your help Rock on..... ![]() Bon

JJ 12Ax7's and JJ E34L's in mine. Check out the sound at Sneaky Pete | Free Music, Tour Dates, Photos, Videos
Not AC/DC songs, but you'll get the idea.

Re: JMP 2204 - AC/DC Sound
aren't you nailing ac dc tones with stock tubes the amp came with? you should. it's allways nicer going nos tubes a la mullards (these are the tubes i have in my 2204 and they absolutly nail the ac dc tones).

Re: JMP 2204 - AC/DC Sound
I agree ..... A 2204 should nail AC/DC without even trying unless you are using a strat or something with single coils

Re: JMP 2204 - AC/DC Sound
They do not use much pre amp gain. They crank the master and get gain from the power tubes. Bass 4, mids 6, hi 6 and tweek from there. Angus uses 25s and Malcolm uses Vin30s. Most people play AC/DC with way too much distortion.

Re: JMP 2204 - AC/DC Sound
maybe you didn`t notice that I was asking for tubes....
Because I wanna change them cause I don`t know how old they are.... Sure, that amp delivers Ac/Dc tone. But what brand of tubes are close to the sound of the amp with its original tubes the amp came with in 1979???? that`s the question guys.... ![]() cheers bon

Re: JMP 2204 - AC/DC Sound
I think that you'll get closer with proper speaker vs different tubes. What kind of speakers are you running now? Also, what pickups are in your guitar?
I find that the Gibson T-Tops are part of the tone (although I don't know whether Angus used them). Of all my guitars, the LP with T-Tops sounds best for AC/DC. |

Re: JMP 2204 - AC/DC Sound
MartyStrat54 sells the tone packs. They are pre amp tubes picked for each slot to bring out the best sounds from your amp.

Re: JMP 2204 - AC/DC Sound
If you want a CP tube try a "Prefered Series 7025" in V1. More headroom, clear and punchy. You might get something similar at TAD in D-Land.
About AC/DC being played with too much gain. Even Malcom did it for a while using a Mesa ![]() Nice guitars by the way! |

Re: JMP 2204 - AC/DC Sound
+1 on watching the gain... AC/DC is pretty clean, especially going back to the Bon years.
