EL34 vs 6CA7

The 6CA7 is an American equivalent to the EL34 tube. One would think they would be tonally similar, but I've read that the 6CA7 sounds more like a 6L6 than an EL34, its counterpart. Does anyone have experience comparing both, and what are the characteristics/similarities/differences?

Re: EL34 vs 6CA7

they sound like EL34's. I had them in my last DSL100. I do think they're a little more low end robust then say....Svetlana new sensor EL34's...those are CRAP.

edit* I had EH 6CA7's.

Re: EL34 vs 6CA7

Early EVH was all Marshall and NOS 6CA7's. I run NOS 6CA7's and I love them. I also recommend the EH 6CA7's as I run them as well. I have limited experience with the JJ's.

I think it is difficult to group all the various EL34's and compare them to NOS and current production 6CA7's. For instance, my testing shows that a NOS 6CA7 sounds better at lower volumes that the EH 6CA7. However, the louder you get, the more similar they sound.

EL34's all have a little different flavor to them. However, I used EL34's until going with the Sylvania Fat Boy dual getter 6CA7's. They have more bottom thump than most EL34's and the top end is smooth, not harsh. I really think these tubes can tame a set of harsh speakers.

I've posted many times about EL34's vs 6CA7's. The best thing to do is buy them and try them.
EastTexas and Harleyboy like this.

I mentioned that in another thread about Edward Van Halen. He used 6CA7 in his old Marshall's, but now with his amp he uses 6L6. I was wondering if the 6CA7 has more sound in common with the 6L6 than EL34. I've read somewhere else that is like a cross between the two, or leaning more towards the 6L6. I like that the bottom end is stronger and the highs are smoother. I notice when I really crank the JCM 800 I have to fiddle with my EQ to get a setting that doesn't drown out some of the frequencies or over power some.
