Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
the windsor is the cheapest decent tube amp. i find that i dont like the tone too much (well s much as my jmp) but its a damn good amp! if you have only 400 for n amp, get it!

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
so true, its loud, its kick ass, i find that the peavy triple x or valve king, at that price, id just go to get a jcm 800, or the jtm reissue. the avt (advanced valvestate tech) is a decent amp for marshall but i like the windsor better, very good for classic rock and add an overdrive onto their, great great tone.

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
yes. definatly. not as good as one, but yes, a lower quality vintage modern, you really get those rock sounds no matter where the gain is, i find gnr or boston or ac/dc (basicly classic rock tone, but a little more gain then the eagles, hendrix and zeppelin even tho gnr is 80s.) can be achieved when the gain is turned up, great hendrix skynyrd zep sounds at mid gain or so and a sweet overdrive sound when gain is down a little. then add an overdrive and you got a great 500 or so $ amp with the cab. 100 for overdrive 400 for head and cab. (yes id buy it used, just becuse its cheap doesnt mean u cant get it cheaper.) yeh basicly very classic rockish tone like a vm but not as good, still very very good for the price, id take that over a avt, or a jcm 2000( i dont really like the 2000's) i find that fenders are great (like the deluxe reissue) but they dont have enough gain, and when your playing clean stuff or slight gain that you dont need a distortion pedal for, you add effects or and overdrive and it sounds horrid, i find with any type of pedal with it, it sounds bad. especially a distortion, not so much the chorus and delay.

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
If you go over to SS get a hybrid instead and consider a Vox Valvetronix, cheap, sounds great, foot switchable channels, built in effects, it can get pretty loud and the distortion is decent. I've given lessons with mine ever since I got one because it's much easier to tote around than a combo and a pedal board or effects board like a GT.

Bugera?
They're supposed to be better than they were, cause they had some issues before. Never seen one, only heard some things about them. Don't know about the quality as well. Not sure if that's the sound you're looking for though. But they're cheap. |

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
Unless you only play cleans and spend a lot of time in the studio that's 400.00 better spent elsewhere.
The AD100VT for 579 is a much better amp all the way around even though it's a hybrid. That's why for what you're playing and where you're playing and what they're probably -paying- I'd go with the Valvetronix AD30VT 30W combo. For 269 new it offers the most bang for the buck. It has built in effects, the distortion isn't bad, it has 2 channels, built in amp and cab models, tap tempo delay etc. I'd definitely get the foot switch and if there's a Best Buy in Hilo or Kona you should be able to pick one up there. Oh and it also has built in power reduction: VOX | AD modeling amplifier imho, I wouldn't gig with any of the above amps because of what I already have, but if I were forced to choose I'd go with the AD30VT and if you go with the windsor definitely change the power tube to a good 6L6 and dump the stock speaker and stick in something better. I think the windsor sucks imo but I'm harsh when it comes to alleged 'all tube' tone and that it ain't got imo. I do like the fact that the amp will take different tubes and has a built in attenuator, but it's built in because it definitely needs it. Did I mention I think they suck? Besides for the same money you throw into a windsor you're on your way to getting yourself a real tube amp. I have the AD30VT which I bought pretty much on a whim when I was in Anchorage Best Buy. They had them on sale for like 239 or something and my kids were both shopping for Nintendo DS Lite's with the wife so needless to say she was surprised to see me show up with my own cart toting an amp! ![]() Next time you get to town check out the amps suggested and decide for yourself, after all that's really the only way you're going to be able to tell if you can use it for what you do bruddah!

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
the windsor definatly isnt the best tube amp but if your gigging and you have 400 bucks id get the windsor, i have a vox ad. it sounds decent while playing with music, but with a band it really doesnt sound too great. no way the tone is as good as the windsor. neither are the greatest amps to gig with and if you gona spend like 400 or 500 id just jump to the next level and spen like 800 or 900 nd get a used jcm 800 combo or somthing. but if you only have 400 buy a windsor, but of course try them both, its your opinion. neither are true tube amps.
a bugera? i thiught those were like shit loads? |

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
Actually the recent Bugeras aren't too expensive but if you're putting that kind of dough out you might as well buy a Marshall
![]() He's pretty much a one man band right stock hippie?

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
Hear are a few budget tube amps to look for that will give you that classic rock crunch if money is tight. These are no longer in production so we are talking used. A lot of players are onto these already and they are starting to get collectable so grab them when you find a deal on them:
Carlsbro TC60 head Carlsboro 50Top combo Traynor YBA-1 Sound City 50+ Sound City 50R (same as 50+ with reverb) Sound City L100 Sound City B100 (bass version of the L100) |

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
Egnater has the Rebel. Bogner has the Alchemist but it's not really cheap. Blackstar has just introduced the HT-5 which is supposed to be killer but it's only 5 watts.
An Ampeg VL502 (Lee Jackson designed) goes for around $450 these days and they can be dialed in to sound like hot rodded JCM 800s. It's a channel switcher with built in attenuator. |

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
A few more things regarding the old amps I listed; your can flip them and get all your money back if you don't like them and they are old so they sometimes come with Mullards in them that are worth more than what you paid for the amp.

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
I drove by it a few weeks ago but never really checked it out. I work 80 miles away in the Hartford area so I try not to drive around on my time off if I can help it.
