Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
Although they're hybrid I still think they sound pretty groovy

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
I would recommend an old Carvin X100B. They'r really great sounding amps and very cheap, I've even seen half stacks go for like 400$. I bought my X50B, which is the 50w version, for 400 euros and I've been really happy with it. It doesn't feel like a cheap amp at all, very well build. People describe it as a hot rodded JCM800.

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
Perhaps the cheapest new all tube guitar amp ever:
Buy Crate V Series V18-212 18W 2x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp - Scratch 'n' Dent | Tube Combo Amps | Musician's Friend MF had the 1X12 version a few months ago for $125. It was a very good amp, but a bit heavy with its chipboard cab. The design is like a JCM800 Master Volume amp but with more gain range and EL84's. The cheapest all tube Marshall amps (or at least ones with tube output stages) are either the 9000 series rack mount preamps and power amps, and the JCM900 heads. But the JCM900's are climbing in value. FWIW, JCM800 solid state amps are fairly inexpensive still, and are very good amps. |

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
I just picked up the 333xl head. Not up there with my 2204 by any means but not a bad amp for the money. It can be a bit fizzy sounding at lower volumes as most high gain amps are but, put some better tubes in it, and turn it up a bit and it can sound rather nice. The clean channel is quite usable and the crunch channel is the best channel IMO. The gain channel can be a bit problematic if you are more a classic rock guy like me. All three channels have separate EQ and volume controls. The 2 gain channels also have gain control and there is a universal master volume for all three channels plus a universal presence control. Amp also has a loop and built in reverb.

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
I only tried it with my friends setups and with his guitar so I can't comment too much. It didn't sound that great but pretty good at least. As Mmorse commented it was a bit fizzy sounding but I didn't crank it up so that probably explains it. Definitely a great amp and it has a lot of gain and I mean a lot! My friend who plays very heavy stuff, like Killswitch Engage, In Flames, Death, said that the lead channel might have a bit too much gain.

Re: whats the least expensive all tube head..
Hi all,
My buddy is a Peavey dealer. I have taken many home for the weekend and took them back and told him what I thought. Although they have changed a bit--the peavey 30 is great--or it was. It looks different than a couple years ago. In fact most of the Peavey stuff is just as good and a lot less cash. I just traded in a Musicman HD130 for another LP. Those suckers sing and take a beating, but I like the Peavey for a newer amp--the 30 used is about $275-or so--with an out for a cab. I had one also that was a copy of Fender tweeds. What a steal--I got that for $350 with 50 watts 2x12. What more do you need? Mike |
