Re: did HOT TUBES try out a VM yet?

hot tubes,

I am attaching an email from my tech that may address the problem you had with the VM you played through. Like steelhorse stated, the tubes do make a difference (especially preamp tubes) in this amp and you may have played one that was terribly biased. Don't give up on the VM until you get a chance to hear one that is set up properly.

If you haven't read my other posts, I have purchased a 2466 head and my tech currently has it. He is tweaking it for me.

I will post his comments as he makes changes. I really think you will like the amp much better if you hear one that is set up correctly. My combo is killer.

"Sounds less full than your other amp.. very loud, but not quite 100 watts... It sounds to me like it could be pretty severely under biased (cold)... Tubes arriving any day now, will update you about the change.. Will test the bias before changing them."

Re: did HOT TUBES try out a VM yet?

this is some good info boys , but my local marshall dealer is still doing nothing about the
problem , a few of the other staff members are going to pressure the manager to do
something real soon , they say !

and as i have stated before , i also think its something with the bias or tubes etc.
no box with the legendary name like MARSHALL should ever have to sound like that ,
see now you got me started !!!!...........if any sales rep from said local store took pride
in his /her job they would have play tested that amp and found it to be far from the
standards that marshall has built there reputation on , and then to just let it sit like that
on the show room floor and to continue to do nothing about it .......this just angers me
to no end .

Re: did HOT TUBES try out a VM yet?

This may have been mentioned before, but you have to have the VM master above 4 for it to sound good. I noticed on my 2466 last night that if it is barely turned up (say to 1 or 2) it sounds very thin and buzzy. But as you crank it, it starts sounding great fast. There is a sweet spot around 5 or higher on the master volume where the character of the amp changes for the better (WAY better). If you have to audition it at whisper volumes, try to locate a power soak of some kind so you can get the master around 5 or higher.

Same thing with my 2266. I found the sweet spot on mine when master volume was around 6.

Speakers do make a HUGE difference with the VM. My main cab is a slant 4X12 with Weber reconed Greenbacks, and it gets a bit sizzly with the master volume low, but gets REAL SWEET when the master is up. I sometimes use an Airbrake attenuator clone just to knock the volume down a bit, which helps a lot.

My gigging cab has one Vintage 30 and an Eminence Wizard, and it isn't quite as bright, which helps at lower volumes as well.

Yea i noticed that with my G12M heritiage green backs
at low volume they sound sizly, but at high volume they
come alive.
The G12H heritages sound good at low lolume and high
a more efficient all around speaker.

The V-30's sound great with the VM also, i have all
three kinds.
