Some poeple say that the knew amps marshall makes arn't that good than the older ones. The Mg series are pretty ok but not that good for a wall of power. i mean really, i have i line six 40watt amp and it could thrash the hell out a 100watt amp. If you want a good amp nowadays u would have to spend 3grand for a Re-issue. I think a good idea would be if marshall made and all tube seires, not valvestate that just means its not valve! but a pure valve and in a whole line of amps. that would be awsome. Its should be good for metal, rock, hard rock, blues, reggae, classic rock and punk adding a good clean sound with some fx's now that would be good.
Who agrees? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() :h ippie:

Re: New or Old?
Hmmm, never heard a Line 6 that could thrash a 100 watt Marshall but ok I'll play along.
I had the opportunity to buy a Line 6 Bogner head and matching cab for cheap (I dunno, I think the guy was having problems with it at times and wanted to buy a real tube amp) anyway, long story short, great sounding little amp especially WITH the matching cab and the special footswitch. All kinds of bells and whistles and I had a blast until it cut out and then back on and then back out. This happened a few times. I contacted Line 6 about it. Great folks, very responsive, told me to visit the forum (wow!) and see if could muster up some help there (why thanks!). I finally got it going again (for awhile) and this is no wall of sound as I think you put it, it was more a wall of fizz once I cranked that sucker up. Then to top it all off, I tried it with a different cab for like you know more of an objective review and it sounded, um, weak. It was only through the mated cab that it sounded decent. Now anyone who knows me here knows what I'm going to do next, Yep I ABY'd the sucker not with one but 2 other 1/2 stacks. Why because I can and 2 because I have the switch to do so. My Triple Rectifier w/Boogie cab laid waste to this thing and promptly thereafter so did my DSL100 w/1960A. Is this gig worthy? I have to vote no, not because it can't be gigged because I think it might be able to cut through the mix but because I can't afford to have it go out on me and according to the 'support forum' I'm not the only who experiencing these issues. I did like the models and the effects although some sounded, well, sterile and digital but they are digital so I can't really complain. And in closing I have yet to see a major band or player playing with a wall of these things or any Line 6 yet, but maybe because I'm not into death metal or whatever, I don't know but usually people who play with great feel and emotional content are into analog and that can only be achieved with tube baby! As for prices, heck for under a grand I'll sell you a brand new DSL 100 or SLX-2100, or you can spend more and get a JVM 410 or Vintage Modern head which are the latest flag ship models by Marshall. The JVM 410 probably streets new for around 2K, the VM for between 1200-1400 depending on whether you get the 50 watt or 100 watt. Cabs are abundant and reasonable, and Marshall's have the tone. Rock on!

Re: New or Old?
Have you even looked to see what Marshall offers these days? The DSL and TSL series (although some may be discontinued, there is stil some stock left out there) are all valve. The Vintage Modern is all valve. The JVM series is all valve.

Re: New or Old?
How true Steelhorse. Besides the usual description of "warm". It's almost indescribable at times the feel you can get out of a tube. When the sound is right, I almost get goosebumps on my fingers. Technology has come a long way, but you just can't match that feeling out of solid state circuits. If you could, the Mosfet would have taken off years ago, and the flagship Marshalls wouldn't still be all tube amps.

Re: New or Old?
Hi,
yes - I too have found tube amps to be more reliable. I once worked in a music shop and our repair shop was full with faulty transistor amps - I recall a string of Carslboro, Peavey and H&H tranny amps would be constantly going thu our repair shop. A lot of the problems were due heat on the PCBs which caused dry joints and wore down the other components. I know modern valve amps have PCBs but they are usually smaller and less cluttered (except for maybe the PCB on a TSL). Most of the valve amps in our shop were there to be re-tubed (bias) or their owners wanted mods. Of course a valve is sensitive (so I carry spares) but I would not trust a tranny amp for regular touring - maybe use one as a backup just in case. The tranny amps do sound very good but I play hard rock and I need natural valve distortion - a Line6 would be good in a top 40 pop band maybe. Cheers Brett |
