Has anyone ever had an effects pedal stop working after using it in an effects loop?

I put my Boss CE-2 in my effects loop - turned up the input gain - and now the chorus just makes a bunch of noise? It worked fine for about 5 minutes, and then quite working...

Re: Has anyone ever had an effects pedal stop working after using it in an effects lo

Hi,

no - never. It is very unlikely that it was caused by overload/under load of the signal... yet maybe Paolo knows- he is the technician here... I never had a pedal die on me from being connected anywhere. I dropped one once into a deep puddle of water - that downed it. I broke a pcb in one thru making my own mod which went wrong - but never 'just like that' as the great Tomy Cooper used to say... He also said things like this:

I went to the doctor the other day,
I said 'it hurts when I do that'
he said ' well don't do it'

My neighbour said 'My dog doesn't eat meat'.
I said 'Why not?'.
He said 'We don't give him any'

Cheers Brett

I did a Monte Allums CE-2 Chorus mod.It sounded fantastic! I used it in front of my amp - and then in my effects loop.I turned the parallel effects input gain level up,and that's when it started making a huge amount of noise? It doesn't matter if I have a cable plugged into the input of the CE-2 or not... As soon as I plug a cable into the output of the pedal,it comes through the speakers.
It does the same thing whether I use a battery - or the power supply. With the Monte Allums mod,I can use the Boss PSA adapter. This really sucks! It was the best sounding chorus I've ever heard - until it took a shit on me!

Sorry but Monte Allum's are the 3rd to last word you used. I tried one (DS1) a few months back and had my regular mod check out the mods and all of his caps and components were subpar.

He works in conjunction with another mod CMAT, stay away from those guys.

You want a good chorus mod that will be backed up with service and sound good, do a Keeley.

I'd recommend my guy but he avoids modulation and delay pedals, he says it's hard to keep the costs down on them.

This is my first experience with Monte Allums mods.I must admit that "when it worked" it sounded incredible... Way better than stock! Now that I think about it - I did the same thing to an original Electric Mistress Flanger about 15 years ago.I plugged it into my Soldano effects loop, and it fried a part in the Flanger. The parts supplied n the MA mod kit are good parts...same as what I've seen in Keeley modded pedals. The Burr Brown IC's are top-notch! I will wait to hear back from MA - maybe he can direct me on what to look at? The best mods I've heard so far were done by Rick Hamel at S.I.B. in California.I just wanted to try this one out for myself.

I only recommend Keeley's because the back up their mods and re-do or refund. I don't have any of theirs anymore, I use strictly garmopatmods.com

The only way I can think that an effects loop would fry an effect is if there was something wrong with the loop. Most effects are protected from input overvoltage, so you'd have to have so much input voltage to overcome the protection you'd notice the problem elsewhere. It is possible to hit the input of an effect with over 1000 volts just from the stored up charge in your body when you plug a cable in. It's probably more likely that perhaps there is an unrelated problem in the pedal itself, especially if it was just worked on.

What type of amp are you using?

I'm using it with a Guytron GT100.I run the Guytron, with my Marshall 1959RR and a switcher.I've run many effects through my Guytron loop with no problems! I'm thinking that it has something to do with the MonteAllums mod? It sounded fantastic though! Right up until I started to increase the "effects" level gain on the front panel. It has a parallel effects loop with a front panel control like on the Marshall 6100LM.I've emailed MA...but no response yet.I've also emailed Howard Davis.I'll call Rick Hamel at S.I.B. today. If Rick can't figure it out - I don't know what else to do? The difference in sound was astounding! It made my CE-2 like 100X more musical! As lush as a CE-1 - but more hi-fi to be sure! Like I said though - I damaged an EM Flanger by plugging it into my Soldano SLO 100 effects loop.I took the flanger to Dane Beamish (excellent builder BTW) in Cleveland for repairs.I had called Soldano, and they said that the SLO effects loop is considered "hot".They told me to run rack-effects only! I'm thinking about going over to SkyCraft Electronics and purchasing all the parts used in the MA mod kit,and redoing it.When something like this happens - I just can't leave it alone.
