Which Marshall amp ?
Hi all,
I'm new in this forum, looking for some advice.. I've been gigging with an early 1970's Gibson SG and early 1970's Siverface Fender Twin for years, I'm now thinking the Twin is a little harsh in tone and I'm possibly going to replace it with a Marshall 50 W or 100 W Marshall head and quadbox, In our band we do a range of music but mostly rock from 3 Doors Down to Offspring, I'm an Angus Young fan and I like sweet harmonic feedback as well. There just seem to be to many choices in the Marshall range. Any opinions appreciated, Cheers Doc |

Re: Which Marshall amp ?
My opinion is to stay with an all tube Marshall. Look for one with 12AX7s (ECC83) and EL34s for that original sweet Marshall tone. Although some would say that there is, there is no substitute for this. I have been playing through Marshalls since the very early 70s.

Re: Which Marshall amp ?
get a handwired series head
Just picked up the 20 watt head and cab myself, and ill tell you, it nails every classic rock tone you want, and the tone clarity and string seperation is the best i have ever heard. And by that i am talking about playing the most complex chords and they dont get mudded or mushed even with a booster pedal. Now i dont know where youd typically play, but i think that the super lead head might be way too loud for you. These amps have to be cranked to really shine, but then youll be rewarded with the best overdriven musical distortion youll ever hear. The HW series offers an 18watt combo, a 20watt head and the 100watt superlead. I found the 20 watter to have the perfect volume. Dont be fooled, it is really really loud for 20 watts. volumewise it is a fair bit louder than 40watt fenders I've had. Do yourself a favour and go try one out cranked all the way. youll be in heaven

Re: Which Marshall amp ?
Vintage Modern 2266. The end.
It will do anything you want. Anything. It's open, articulate, good dynamics, complex harmonics, excellent string separation, great crunch, sweet, vintage, classic. Best described as a Silver Jubilee rolled up with a Plexi with a JCM800 in for good measure.
