Which amp is better?

I'm new to this forum, sorry if I'm breaking rules with this post but I need opinions on which amp is better. I'm looking to buy a plexi reissue and am stuck between these two:

MARSHALL JTM 45 PLEXI

Marshall Plexi 1959 SLP

One is a metro amps clone and the other is a real marshall. If the real marshall is worth the extra 150 then I wouldn't feel too bad about paying extra but if the clone is a truly better build than the reissues, that's cool too! Thanks for the help.

Re: Which amp is better?

Sorry. That was a bit of a rushed post. Anyways, I'm looking for a decent plexi head and I recognize that there is about a 60 watt difference between those two heads I'm looking at but I guess what I'm trying to ask is which do you guys believe would be a better buy? I don't play in a band but occasionally do lend my gear out to my friends who play live gigs. I play LOTS of zeppelin (I guess I'm "obsessed") and am interested in the tone achieved by Page's 100 watt to 200 watt conversion. Seeing as how I'm only 19, I can't really afford and old vintage hand-wired rig and am doing my best with what I CAN afford.

Sorry again if this was the noobiest post of the week. I would like to sit and do the research myself but I kind of need to get some opinions A.S.A.P. as these amps will most likely sell soon.

Thanks again!

Re: Which amp is better?

if you can afford a new marshall reissue or that metro clone you can afford a vintage amp. i have bought 5 jmps (all pre 78) and an 86 JCM 800 in the last 2 years - each was less than 700 bucks. so you should continue your search for what you really want.

Re: Which amp is better?

i agree , up here in canada you can buy various vintage amps for alot less
than what the reissue amps cost, last week i was in a store and i say a
young kid buying a mid 80s jcm 800 50 watt head for 550$ , it was in fair
shape but all in all it was a good deal, some of thr reissue prices are a
little high in my opinion. happy hunting!

Re: Which amp is better?

Yeah, I have a JCM 900 2x12 combo (4102) and I'm trying to sell it for $700 to afford a better head. Economy sucks so no one has even made a lower offer or anything. I don't know an EXTREME amount about Marshall amps (circuitry and all that fun electronic business) but I'm pretty sure $700 isn't a ridiculous price to ask. I paid more than that for it so I don't want to get too screwed.

Re: Which amp is better?

Both good amp's! I've had them both, and liked them very much. First one I had was the JTM45 Reissue. Very good amp for oldish blues/ bluesrock. Sold that one and bought a 1977 100W Super Lead. That one was so loud I just had to use stompboxes. Sold that one and bought a JCM900 Dual Reverb, but didn't fall in love with the 80s metal sound it had. Not a bad amp at all, but it just wasn't to my liking. So again....sold it.

Finally I bought a 1987X Reissue, and that's a keeper!!! It's by far the best Marshall I've had. Because of the "bright cap" it breaks up very early, but you get a heavenly warm clean sound by turning down the volume on your guitar. If you want the Jimmy Page sound, this one pretty much nails it without blowing out the windows (even if it's very loud). I use it with a Koch Powerbrake because I want to be able to hear the rest of the band while we're prectising:-) I changed the stock tubes a while ago to nail a spesific sound I was after (Dickey Betts), and now it's just a bloody dream! Just love it!!!

Good luck in your search:-)
