JCM 800 50 watt 4212 combo

my name is Rich. Im new here. I have had this amp since 1986. split channel/reverb,effects loop. original celestion's. Drake trans. it has been sitting for the last 12 years and it time to refresh it or sell it. it has GE 6550's. if I sell it what is it worth? it is mint. the volume knob is a little dirty but getting better with use. if i keep it I want Groove tubes 6550R. do I need to rebias it with these? and where is the adjustment for bias? this isnt fixed bias amp is it? I have the bias tool but didnt see where to adjust. i will do pre amp tubes also. I love tubed Marshall's but i just use it in home and its louder then i need. I was thinking about the haze 15 or maybe the Mg15hfx. i really like tubes but havent got prices yet. any thoughts

how do i make pics larger please

Re: JCM 800 50 watt 4212 combo

(1) PRICE
If you decide to sell your amp you can easily get $1,200 to $1,400 out of it. If you are going to sell it, I would first start off with craigslist, and then if that fails try Ebay. However, the volume knob MUST BE FIXED before obtaining these prices. The prices I gave you are the prices of a MINT, COMPLETELY STOCK & UNMODIFIED CIRCUIT, and FULLY FUNCTIONING (W/O PROBLEMS) JCM800 2205 2x12 COMBO AMP (like the one you almost have). If I were you I would not sell that thing. The tone that that amp produces, destroys/is way better than the other amps you have listed.

(2) BIAS
UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, DON'T BIAS IT.....b/c tube amps can kill you with the stored up electric current they contain. However, if you are going to go ahead and do it at your own risk towards yourself..........YOU SHOULD read the info found in these links first, before you do anything.....

Biasing a Tube Amp - how is it done?

Pretty sure this will be your bias adjustment

(3) 6550 TUBEs
THE JCM800's sound killer with the 6550 power tubes. The Groove Tubes GT 6550R is just an overpriced/relabeld tube. Here are some good links to get a look at some 6550 tube prices.

6550 Tube Types

6550 / KT88 / KT90 Power Tubes

Keep it...I have the 100 watter 4211 and have just re-valved it with JJ`s throughout (apart from a tung sol ECC83 in position 5....if it were a car it would be a NASCAR...it's got absolutely massive tone.

Keep it. I have a pair of those G12T75's with the vents and they seem warmer and creamier than newer G12T75's. I would only sell to upgrade not to downgrade.

Re: JCM 800 50 watt 4212 combo

Nice amp I use the 1X12 version. Some members have the wrong impression about this design they think the 1 channel 800 is the way to go. I found you can get the same sound as the 1 channel by just using channel 1 for gain. Just blast up the channel 1 volume to 3/4s or more and use the master at low numbers. Great Page distortion but with this amp you have reverb and effects loop.

You can also use the switching thing if you want to for small clubs. Nice bright amp. If you're going to cash out I'd shoot for $1200.

Re: JCM 800 50 watt 4212 combo

well I finally got the knobs and jacks all cleaned up and put some miles on it after 10 years. sounds like i remember it. I have a Boss GE-7 runnning through the loop and that really cleans up the tone. i have not done the tubes yet as I wanted everything working properly before I stick new tubes in. I just redid my Charvel. shield painted all the cavities, upgraded the wiring with silver wire. new on/on/on switch with a Dimarzio DP 100. took out a Bill Lawrence XL 500. the DP really screams. wow. series/single/parallel. with middle and neck pickups there is alot of tone options now. I think im gonna try the JJ tubes. I have read alot of different set ups here. what is your favorite with this style amp for pre amptubes?
