Re: AVT or MGFX

I have both the MG15 and the AVT20. The avt is much better than the MG15. The MG15 is totally solid state. The avt 20 has the pre amp tube.
I would definitely recommend getting the avt20.

Re: AVT or MGFX

save your money for an all tube amp if its that important to you. a tube amp's famous overdrive comes from a tube in the power amp section, not the preamp. the tube will change the tone slightly but in my opinion it changes it for the worse. instead of a crisp tight solid state preamp going to a rigid solid state power amp, it has a tube which isnt as efficient at passing voltage (which is why good tube amps sound "creamier") sending a mushy signal to a power amp that magnifies that muddyness. thats how i see it and id rather have a decent soild state amp than an amp that costs more because they wrote how it has a tube in it when it actually makes for a worse sound IMO

btw what kind of music do you like? what will the amp be used for? what kind of guitar do you have? effects? gigging? anything else we should know?

yeah thinkin about that but the small tube amps are still loud you have to really crank it to get it nicely singing - it will be a bedroom amp and will play all kinds of music.

Re: AVT or MGFX

AVTs are much better than MGs. I can't stand the buzzy overdrive on any of the MGs, but AVTs sound quite good. However, the AVT range is discontinued, and it is/was considerably more $ than the MGs. MG amps are fine for clean. So unless you have a good line on price for the AVT, something solid state with pedal or modelling might be the way.

My answer for late night low volume practice is a Bad Monkey into a 10W Mg10 set on the clean channel - its all cheap as chips and sounds just fine.

Ditto for me, I couldn't have said it better. I have both too.

Re: AVT or MGFX

Crate is selling the V5 all tube amp for 99 dollars and it hits the British tone.

This is a great thing to get from musciansfriend.com or guitarcenter.com they are taking preorders because they WILL sell out faster than fast.

You can get the Crate V18 for 149 and that would blow your mind but you need to act fast and preorder because this is the preferred model and you would need to get in the pipeline.

The Marshall MG10 is supposed to have good marshal solid state tone but for a few bucks more you could have the V eighteen or for the same money the Crate V five with all tube circuitry and sound.

I would say grab one of these Crates and wait for a sale on a bigger Marshall. You won't be disappointed with the Crate amp but it is not available in the GC stores only online.

You can get a V50 for 199. This is an unbelievable price for a great blues amp. An awesome blues amp with two channels. This is the one I want, even though I have a new Peavey Delta Blues and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, both lacquered tweed and awesome amps. I have some outstanding amps and miss my old Marshall vintage Valvestate II thirty watt combo that I picked up a couple years ago in mint condition. I sold it to a kid in my son's band for seventy five dollars. I was going to put a really nice new speaker in it and I'm sure it would have sang. I might still get a MG30.

I just picked up a Marshall bass amp new, the practice amp, MB30 and guitars sound great thru it too, but not like thru my Blackheart Little Giant tube amp into my Epi Valve Jr. cab, needlesstosay.

On a budget the MG10 is cool, but the Crate V5 is the same price and it's all tube. It looks like a fairly easy decision. You can always get a MG ten, but you'll never see the V five at that price again, or even the V eighteen.

Hope this helps and that you are not tunnel vision on the Marshall. The Crates are supposed to hit that tone squarely.
