Re: jcm800 2203 - jcm800 2203kk
So I still haven't had a chance to try out my new 2203KK at band practice, but it seems my suspicions involving the "Beast" mode are confirmed. That gate is just too quirky for me. I generally plug right into a NS-2 so that it kills any hum from my guitar and surrounding lighting/neon, and let any pedals that add gain/noise just do their thing. However, it seems like the gate on the KK comes after the boost, no? Either way, the decay tends to be a little rough...and touchy. On the other hand, the NS-2 pretty much eliminates this issue, because one can set the decay to minimum/(immediate) and adjust the threshold to taste. That would have been a nice feature on the KK. Also, the minimum boost setting on the Beast mode is set a touch too high for me, and just becomes absurd past 12:00, IMO. So, here's what I found works best for me (at 1/4 volume):
Hardtail Strat with SH-5 humbucker-->NS-2-->Xotic EP Booster (on level 1.5/10, +bass boost +bright)-->other pedals-->2203KK, (gain maxed). Ah, just a touch more bass and treble, a few more dB gain, some added saturation, and a more natural tone than with the Beast "frowny face" boost. So now the question is...since I'm not using the Beast features, and it's essentially a non-"handwired" KT88 JCM800 (no snobbery intended), do I keep it or flip it for an EL34 "handwired" JCM800? I still like the way the mids sit better on my tried-and-true EL34 Emplexador 50, but I'm looking for more thunk and headroom for some heavier material my band is working on. Hrmm...

Re: jcm800 2203 - jcm800 2203kk
What do you find quirky about the gate? I find it works perfectly. One point about the gate is, if you have the amp on but the stand by off (so there's no sound) and you turn your guitar up the gate will pick up your signal and you can see it go from red to green and back as you play/mute the strings - no sound comes out of the speakers obviously because the stand by isn't turned on. Not sure if this helps you understand the way the gate is wired in or not, but an observation I did notice that I though I'd share.
I'd say try the amp in a band situation first before you decide. If you do decide to look into another 2203 you may want to try one with 6550's. You mentioned you like the EL34's (mids) but want more thunk, the 6550's are a nice in between to the KT88's and the EL34's, still lots of mids and good bottom end, more bottom than the EL's but less than the KT's.

5digits6strings, you're doing it wrong!
![]() Take note: Guitar>cable>amp that's all you need! ![]() Let's say the 2203KK it's a "Raw hardcore" amp, not an "artsy-fartsy hipster" amp

Re: jcm800 2203 - jcm800 2203kk
5digits, remember the gate knob is 'backwards', set it lower and crank the amp loud. The assault has a shit ton of gain. I hardly have the assault past noon and it sounds brutal.

Re: jcm800 2203 - jcm800 2203kk
Good morning everyone!
@5digits6strings: As I wrote on a previous page of this thread, the way Mr. Santiago built the "10 band EQ" and "Noise Gate" are not hard to understand. They are built-in the amp with the traditional 4 cable method - and yes - the "10 band EQ" and the "Noise Gate" are after the "stock" part of the JCM800. All these features are active when the "Beast" button is engaged. Because you wrote that you use a gate with the 2203KFK, I will share with you a link, with someone asking Mr. Santiago aboout a similar question. JVM Forum • View topic - 2203KK built in gate question for Santiago As for the tone/sound you wrote that you love to have but you are confused of keeping this amp or buy a new. Well, my friend the KT88 tubes are the big brother of EL34 tube. These tubes (EL34) have the ability to distort earlier than KT88 or 6550 power tubes. By the way, please notice that the 2203KK head it does have a "10 band EQ" but only the "curve" of the boosted mids. That means that you can't scoop the mids when you activate the "Beast" button only boost them. That's why you feel more confortable when you play on an other amp or you don't use at all the "Beast" button. When you have added boost, plus bright, plus other features from outboard equipment and then you engage it it sounds shit. And here comes the point where I agree with what Wiseblood wrote. 6550 power tubes have the ability to distort later and are "clean" power tube. See Zakk Wylde the way he use his amp. He puts a lot of pedals in front of his amp who are equipped with 6550 power tubes. Plus he uses EMG pickups who have the ability to be noiseless and his speakers (EV12L) who do they same thing. They stay "clean". There are rumors that a signature Marshall will be released with 6550 power tubes plus "EV" speaker natch cab. I am refering to the upcoming(?) Zakk Wylde signature. You can wait for it (I know, I do ) or if you can find a mid-80's early 90's JCM800 with 6550 or EL34 (your choise) you are OK with that.![]() So, in my opinion, it would be better to try a different amp and check if you are OK with it. ![]()

![]() Never said I was using both at the same time. Instead of the Beast mode I was using an EP booster after a NS-2, to boost and silence the amp. Either way, still a cool amp. I'll just have to reserve any additional comments until I get it use it with the band.

Hello Neylus. I honestly don't know but I found this thread for you.
You can of course use the forum to ask. I would like to know, just from curiosity too. MetroAmp.com Forum • View topic - Help to mod my JCM800 to #34 specs
