How would you guys rate the DSL 100 compare the rest of Marshall fleet

I , for one think that it certainly not in the categories of Plexi or JCM 800 but where would you put in the Marshall fleet...?and in terms of sonic sprectrum (dark , in your face , creamy ...)I personnely am impress by the sound I have with the
lead 2 channel .I use it without any disto , only a boost in the loop for lead and , to me , it is a perfect match of in your face and creamy sound!!

It depends on what you need and how loud - also all 3 amps have something special when played loud.

The DSL beats the Plexi hands down on a modern rock sound as the Plexi needs a tube pre-amp to get hi-gain distortion. Further more you need a very good tube preamp to get anywhere close to the quality of the DSL so it costs yet more money -$$$ - and there is still no channel switching and it is as loud as Hell! Without playing loud the Plexi is like any other (except an Orange amp which is true crap). If you need to play anything more that blues or one-horse rock with channel switching, using nice fx-units in a fx-loop then forget the Plexi.

The 800 JCM is equally loud and has the Kerrang-crunch and big balls, but that was all - infact my 2 that I had were nothing special it if anything they were harsh. Why do you think so many have to be modded? Because they are missing the modern fx.loops, the clean sound and the extra valve stage to make decent solos. You need extra pedal(s) to get the end result unless you can play on full like Michael Schenker...

The DSL does it all and has a few tricks of its own without needing assistance from other devices. It has great gain reserve for creamy solos and for modern Metal, has the best clean ever, it is a warm amp, it can also do old school JCM 800 Kerrang and it has big balls. It can do the Plexi type sound yet we should be careful with defining the Plexi sound as it is a complete world of its own at different volume levels and it was for another generation of musicians. The only disadvantage with the DSL is that Marshall really messed up the design and did not make all 4 switchable channel options on a foot switch! If I was to have a Mod done them this would be the one.

Today I have a DSL and a Plexi - both for different reasons. I recently sold my JCM 900 and before that I had 2 x JCM 800s. I love my Plexi for being a Plexi and I love my DSL because it has all the flexible features I need for a modern group.

Being practical, the winner is - the DSL.

Cheers Brett

YouTube - Windsor Head Demo Episode 1
i think what peavey did was leave out a FX loop...an extra channel...no reverb...and then said it was supposed to be a tube jcm 800....go figure

I have no experience with the TSL but there are plenty of DSL vs. TSL posts here.

Re: How would you guys rate the DSL 100 compare the rest of Marshall fleet

Hi Stock Hippie,

I bought a Peavey Windsor top on Fleabay and sold it within 3 weeks. They are nothing like JCM800s and the Plexi sound was thin. More like a Sound City with a Tubescreamer etc. ps. they come with an fx.loop

I paid 200Euro and at first I did not care - they come from China but I thought Peavey would be satisfied with Quality Assureance... I hear now they are no longer produced...?

I thought I could use it for a backup should my DSL die on stage. However the distorted sound was being choked - you could hear the way it was struggling to deliver a full distorted chord - as if the tubes were no good. I put them in another amp and they were fine! Further more there was an intermittant squeel sound too. Dissapointed I went to the Peavey forum and posted - I was guessing I had a technical fault or something was not setup right. Yet others started saying they had that too - maybe not everyone, but 3 from 8 so to speak.

I need clean sounds and the Windsor cannot do that so I flogged it. I got my money back and that was that.

Cheers Brett
