some noob questions about valvestate 2000 avt series

A friend of mine is selling an AVT50 combo for $150 and I'm looking for some information online...but I can't seem to find very much and the marshall website does not appear to have it under the product line.
Noob question #1: Was the AVT series discontinued or am I just not looking hard enough?
Noob question #2: How suitable would it be for playing classic rock music, something in the vein of Eric Clapton?
Noob question #3: Is $150 a good price?

Also, could anyone who has owned the amp tell me what they think about it?

So far as I can tell, the AVTs have just recently been discontinued. the last batch were the AVT 'Tributes', the same as the previous production models with different graphics. There are still some new ones in shops but I think that is the end of them. They are still on the Marshall site:

I haven't played a 50W model but Ive gigged with 100W and 150W ones. They are great for classic rock, not quite up to the all tube designs though.

(dont get too hung up on any one post there, but the overall impression from the reviews of these amps is pretty good)

I don't know about the price, but if it all works and it is in good condition, and you like it, it seems fair IMO. Getting a second hand amp with a known history from someone that you know seems worthwhile to me.

i have an avt 100 combo and its been a great amp, i would never have gone for a trany amp untill i played this one, i also have a tsl, vintage modern jmp and artist so i have a bit of experience.

I've got a 100 as well. They are great amps for that style music and if it's in good condition that price is a steal! Grab it before he changes his mind or raises the price.

I have an old Valvestate 40 (valvestate is the line prior to AVT which stand for Advanced Valvestate Technology) and to me (which is whats it's all about) they sound great for Classic rock. Of course it doesn't compare to a "real" tube amp, but for the fraction of the price they are way more than the fraction of a killer amp! ... to me they sound incredible!

I used to have a Valvestate 40 back in the 90's it was great
they are as close to a real tube Marshall as you can get
the same with the AVT, i have the AVT50 with a V-30 speaker
sitting next to my lazy boy for jamming all the time
the preamp almost has better tone range than my big amps

For $150, it's a steal. Buy it. The stock speaker sucks, but at that price, you can change it. Try a celestion G12m70. It's a great classic rock amp with a lot of potential.

Yeah... I really really dig that amp! It's a joke in the familly, my wife is almost jealous of it when I talk about it! I always wanted a Marshall, but for many years I kept on listening to people telling me that this ot that amp si way superior... then I tried that Valvestate and fell on the floor.

It's a good thing cause I can't throw money to get the amp I wanted (a superlead or a Plexi or 1987X)... So I get it's close enough for me... my wife would file for divorce if I shed 2000$ on a amp!

My woman of 8 years threatened to end it just for getting my AVT about a month ago. I've lived with her and her kids for about 7. I finally told her if you don't care enough about my happiness you're not worth it anyway. That didn't go over well to put it kindly. She still won't give it a rest but now I'm HAPPY

You guys are making me laugh.. My woman is gone, but my guitar equipment still makes me happy. I've owned some of it for over 20 years!!! Does that say anything to you??? I own a AVT50 and I love it. Use it for classic rock & blues. $150! I paid twice that for mine. Get an amp stand and this will keep up with a band with no prob. The speaker isn't that great tho'. It's supposed to be a special design Celestion voiced for that enclosure but I have seen suggestions to change it out with an Emminence "Patriot", or as Peter suggested, the Celestion G12M70. Using a more efficient speaker than the stock one will really help you cut thru the mix.

guys i feel your pain, i own 2 amps 2 massive cabs, 7 guitars, about 20 pedals, 2 crates of leads and some circuit bent tomfoolery and my girlfriend hates me for it!

I have an AVT50 (2000 series), use it for clasic rock, and it rocks very good, i replaced the speaker for a celestion v-30 and it sounds awsome, but the power decreases to about 30 W since the V-30 is an 8 ohm speaker, and the amp is rated 50 W@4 ohm, however i got a celestion G12h(anniversary) on an external cab and life has not been the same since, hey even the wife loves the sound and says its a good purchase (and then wants to go to home depot to get stuff she likes jajaja), still have not applied some recomendation from coldsteal2 on my ext cab, but i have the full 50w, both speakers are 100db wich means that it plays loud and very pleasing.

also i practice with a friend that has a DSL100 with a 4x12 cab with celestions G12T75 (97db´s), and i have no problem keeping up with him on volume (when he doesn´t go all the way up); the other GP in the band has an MG100DFXH and a 4x12 MG4x12 cab and is just as loud as my AVT50

my suggestion is get the AVT have fun with it and be happy, also get something to rub your arm and back if intended to be taken to places since it is heavy

All was fine and well with my lady when she didn't know what I bought my Jubilee for. Note to self: do not buy expensive amps (even at good deals!) if your lady is expecting a ring soon
