Extreme noob JCM question

Ok, I know this is ridiculous,
but I never understood, the JCM800 is a single channel amp (at least some of them are.).
So can you get distortion without a pedal?
I know they are renound for their awesome gain, but where does it come from?

Re: Extreme noob JCM question

if you crank it up, or use an overdrive pedal
You can get distortion by cranking the preamp and
turning down the master volume, but doesnt sound
to good on low volume till you turn the master up
a ways

yeah you got crank it up and get those power tubes hot! if you find its too loud, you may wanna consider gettin an attenuator like a hot plate.
