Problem with Valve Marshall Amp.

Hello to everyone in the forum,

I’m new to this forum and Marshall Amps, and I have two questions...

I recently bought a Marshall JVM410C Combo Amp, it’s a great Valve amp, but I’m having some issues with noise and hum when I play on the Distortion at high levels.
1. I’m using a Fender Stratocaster with single coil pickups and plugging my Guitar directly in front of my amp without any affects. I get this loud humming noise coming from my amp. For live and studio playing it’s not an ideal situation. I know you will get a certain amount of feedback and noise but should it be as loud as this?
2. What type of Guitar leads would you guys recommend, that could possibly reduce noise and are hardwearing and are great for live and studio work.

All help would be very much appreciated and thank you all in advance,

Best of luck
John B.

Greetings from down the road.

1. The hum should not be to excessive levels. Have you tried using different cables or using a buddies guitar? Does the same thing happen? If it's still excessive when you've tried different cables and guitars I'd bring it back to the store and claim warranty. If you open it up to go messing you'll loss the warranty.
2. Any good quality, heavy duty cable should suffice. I've used both Fender and Monster cables and found them very good. Cordials I also found good.

Best of luck.

Re: Problem with Valve Marshall Amp.

Hi J.B,

any hi-gain amp will hiss. My old Peavey 5150 was very bad, so bad, that I could not use certain pedals with it... So you can either learn to avoid it like switching the channel off when the song is not played or use a "hush" de-noiser. Still, it should not be that bad. But of all the guitars in the world you have a Strat.. hmm - a Strat has single coil pickups which do not cancel noise. They attract hum and interference and so you have to stand at a sweet spot away from lights, fridges, and away from the amp itself.

I replaced all of my Strat pickups with hum-free ones from Fender. They work great.

Any professional cable manufacturer should be fine - the answer is do not use a thin cheap cable. And it must be a shielded 1 core guitar cable and not just any old 2 core cable. It is a guitar cable right? If not then there is your answer.

Cheers Brett

+ 1 on the MXR Smartgate. A GREAT noise gate!

Also change the pups for noiseless and use good quality cables and you should be set!
