Choke?

In the late 80īs Marshall stopped putting a choke in there 1959/1987 amps and started using a resistor instead. What was there reason for doing this? Didnīt they think that it altered the sound and since it was easier they started using a resistor instead?

I'd like to think it was to emulate the vintage "saggy" feel of a valve rectifier. That said, it was probably more that they found "little" difference between the two. The plate voltages will still come through a "choke" anyway (OT) right?, and the bean counters decided resistors are cheaper on all fronts (cost, installation etc) so run with that.
This is purely speculation though, obviously!!

Re: Choke?

Yeah youīre probably right there. Sometimes it gets a bit to much of these it must be old to be good and you canīt improve on anything people. I wonder how many could just by ear hear the difference if you set up two of the same type of amp one with a choke and one without. Same thing with these trannys. How many could tell the difference just by listening.
