Artist 3203

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and a new Marshall user. I just bought a 1987 Artist 3203 and thought you might be able to help me as I'm not very knowledgable on amp...

The amp came with a 1965A cabinet (8 ohms). There is a switch "8 ohms -4 ohms" on the back of the amp and I as wondering; If I would add another cabinet say a 1965B using both outputs from the amp, would I move this switch to 4 ohms? Would it be any LOUDER?

Any advice anyone could give me would be appreciated, ie:
What tubes you would suggest I use?
How can I get more Bass? (As I think it sounds a little "Thin"...)
Anyone have a copy of the user manual?

Thanks,

Les Van Perfek

Re: Artist 3203

First, using 2 cabs of equal ohms is important. I believe a 1960 is 16 ohms. Mixing a 16 and an 8 would make an unbalanced load and hurt your amp. Two 16 ohm cabs would make 8. Two 8 ohm cabs would make 4. Now alot of guys will tell you 4 ohms isn't any louder, but adding more speakers moves more air, and that will make it feel louder. Plus, stacking the cabs will get it closer to your head, as opposed to going into the back of your legs. Or put a cab on each side of the stage to spread the sound.

I have trouble with the thinness of the clean channel as well.

The Split Channel Handbook only shows the front and back panels and is really no help.

Clean: vol 3.5, bass 10, mid 6, treble 0
Boost: vol 8, tone 8, gain 2

or

Cleanish: vol 6
Hard Rock: vol 4, gain 6

or

JCM Killer vol 9 tone 10 gain 10

Thanks for your reply, I will try your settings. In the meantime I've put a Boss EQ in the effect Loop to add a little bass with surprisingly good results.

Re: Artist 3203

I ran this head as my main sound for years (late '80s early '90s) through a Marshall 4x12 slant cab and as far as I'm concerned its the best sounding head for overdrive/distortion sounds Marshall ever made. The only mods I ever made were Groove tubes and I ran a Boss EQ pedal through the FX loop.
It's tone is pure Marshall so if you're looking for a Mesa type tone package or modeling or a real clean channel you've come to the wrong place.
