good cab for Marshall Major vintage?

I have a 1969 Marshall Major, transition version w plexi back and metal front. It's 200 watts and I don't have a cab rated to handle at least 200 watts. I have a cab w 4-25w Celestions and a cab with 4-30w greenbacks. Can I use the greenback cab without frying it as long as I don't crank it too high? Sorry if this is a dumb question... BTW I have run it as a test into the cab w 30's and it seemed ok, up to 2 or 3 volume... Will I fry the speakers somehow if I crank the Major up really high?

Oh God yes!!! You'll need 2 cabs rated for at least 100 watts each. Hiwatt makes one rated at 300 watts and even then I'd be careful.

I've owned a Major, they are beast's!! and I have yet to see one, or any other vintage Marshall put out less or the printed rated wattage.........200 watts? more like 225.

Didn't I just answer another question of your's in a different thread??

Here's a cab that should work:

Marshall 1960BV | Sweetwater.com

switches from 4, 8, or 16 ohms, so it should work with anything and supports 280 watts.

Re: good cab for Marshall Major vintage?

thanks for the replies. I bought a cab with 4 - 75 watt Celestions for 300W total, 8 ohm wiring, large Marshall logo on the front. The cab's in good shape. I'll try to post some pics. It's a loud amp, but really it's not that much louder than my 50W bass amp, I think that one's a 1972. The Major is definitely a 1969, from the inside lable.

BTW, I only paid $300 for the cab, from Mark Mussel, a local rocker - been in the scene forever. A cool guy, too.

Huh?

It's not any louder than your 50 watt? The volume may be contained in that the cabinet can only be driven to a certain point. I guarantee that with two cabs,
the Major will walk all over the 50 watt. if not, there is something wrong with that Major.

Yeah, I know what yer sayin. I cranked it to 10 and it was decidly quieter than my 50 W Bass head, which is pretty loud. I might take it to an amp guy. Anone know if a Marshall expert in the Boston area? I'd hate to ship it, it weights a LOT. thanks.
