JMP info

I'm looking for a bit of info if anyone is up to it.
I've owned this JMP head since the mid 90's.
It's pretty bare bones with no frills what so ever.
The model number stamped on the rear panel is 2204.

Thanks in advance, Barrie.

Re: JMP info

It might be very early master model. I've heard about some 2204 and 2203 made with these switches instead of JCM ones in the very beginning of production.

Re: JMP info

To me it appears to be a later JMP Master as they didn't start putting the serial number on the front until 79. What is the letter on the serial number? K = '78, L = '79, M = '80. From the sticker on the back it has the CSA, Canadian Standards logo. JCM 800's have the metal toggles for Canadian export I believe as well. Also it has pointer knobs which I think were later 70's early 80's JMP/JCM from what I've seen.

So late 70's Canadian export 50 watt (2204) is my guess.

Re: JMP info

Yes ... it has the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) logo and some minimal bilingual (french) stenciling on the rear jack panel. It was sold as a 50 watt head back then, so it confirms this fact.
The serial number is O4**9N stamped on the gold front panel underneath the red "power on" light.

Cheers and thanks, Barrie.

I always thought '81 was the first year for the JCM models...
And "M" was the last year for the JMP...1980...

Here is my 1980 "M" 2203...

Very cool custom53 ! ... Here's a closer shot of "JMP" designation on the front panel of my '81. I like the metal toggles since it separates if from most other Marshalls visually.
How long have you owned yours and do you have any history on it?

Cheers, Barrie.

I've had it just a few years. I sold my beloved '77 JMP 2204 years ago (and it was MINT) and regretted it ever since.
I ran across this one for a great price and jumped on it. I have been debating on doing a tube swap to EL34s or E34Ls but haven't done it yet. It came with 6550s... (which are still in it). I was told by the seller that it was a Canadian model but I really have no idea.

It is a beast though...!

Re: JMP info

Speaking of tube swaps, any supplier recommendations, on line or not? (perhaps worthy of a separate thread?)
If your's is a Canadian model there's going to be some French stenciling on the rear jack panel.
Mine is something I doubt I'll ever part with. As you say, "a beast" with some serious delivery all around.

Cheers, Barrie.

Re: JMP info

Strange that its an 81 model with those older power switches.
I had a JMP2203 Master. A 1979 build and it had the larger chunky switches, but maybe that was just common to Australia at the time?

Re: JMP info

Maybe Marshall was clearing out the last from the parts bins and Canada got stuck with the old metal toggle switches that year?

Re: JMP info

I have an 80 JMP 2203 and it has the square switches also. Do you guys have any suggestions for pre amp tubes? I am thinking of swapping mine out and trying something else but don't know where to start. I've seen some who use different tubes in different positions v1-v2?? I don't know if I would screw something up by just trying different brand tubes in different places?

Check with MartyStrat. He can definitely help you with your tube questions.

Re: JMP info

check out the pre amp tube forum for anything about any type, its llllooooonnnggg but theres many pages of worthwhle tips and suggestions. but all depends what you want to hear. i like mullard and the amprex/valvo they are darker and less treble, i found telefunken tooo bright and rca more gainy anyways sorta off topic sorry.

Re: JMP info

Currently I have Raytheon Grey Plates and an RCA high gain tube low noise 7025 in my 2204 and they are badass. We did a comparison in the studio yesterday at a good volume. Bbetween that, my 900 (with similar tubes) and a JMP-1. The JMP 2204 was so much warmer than the other two it was night and day not to mention the clarity even with the gain on 10. The JMP-1 was pretty close but had to be tweaked to get a good tone. The stock presets didn't hold up. Also what amazed me about the 2204 and maybe the tubes helped but the tone held up perfectly at whatever volume I had it at and kept the clarity. Those are my current favorites for that amp.

Excellent! I'll keep that in mind if I decide to swap out the tubes. Thanks.

Cheers, Barrie.

Re: JMP info

The CSA JMPs and JCM800s wore the metal switches well into the 80s. I've had several of them from 1978 to 1984 and they all had the metal toggles.

I don't know when the cosmetics changed as my JMP was a 78 and my oldest JCM800 was a 1982 if memory serves.

Re: JMP info

Apparently cosmetics and guts were all over the place in the mid to late 70's. I'm still trying to figure out my '77 MK II; please look at 1977 MKII 50W: What exactly is it?

Re: JMP info

1976 was the crossover period for the Small Box to Big Box Check this link here. The first two are only about 3300 numbers off from each other where one is the older box and the other the later box.
