Hello from Wilder Amplification
I've already started posting tech help threads in the workbench section, which is my primary hangout here, but didn't realize there was a place to introduce oneself until now.
My name is Jon Wilder and I run Wilder Amplification out of Rohnert Park California. We're a new company just getting going in the business of amplifier and effects manufacturing with our secondary service being guitar amplifier and guitar related gear repair. Just to give a background, I've been an electronics enthusiast for about 17 years with 12 of that being in the field of building guitar amplifiers. I'm also 4 years prior Navy as an Avionics Technician as well as 2 1/2 years in the telecom industry. Vintage/Classic/80's/Modern Marshall tone is my forte' and comes secondary to customer satisfaction here at Wilder Amplification. Our website is up and running, but still under construction. I do have the store up with limited stock at the moment, but am still working on getting it all added on so please bear with us. We are currently taking orders for our Classic Classic model (details below) and we also have some of our tube line listed for order on the site as well. However, we don't yet have the ability to display an "Out Of Stock" notice on the website quite yet (but don't worry, we're working on that) so if you would like to order a stock item, all I ask is that you either call or email for a stock check prior to placing an order with us at this time. I will place a notice on the website once we have some sort of inventory tracker in place on the site. Also about the site, we have a message board installed, but it's not yet configured. We will be running a message board as well as our own Wiki page, called ValveWiki. When it's all said and done, ValveWiki is going to be a "tech article" section explaining everything you'll ever want/need to know about guitar amplifiers and how the internal electronics of them work for those who are interested. I will also be writing tone test articles, articles explaining tube numbering schemes and what manufacturers/distributors mean by their tube designations, and articles on company name changes such as the Svetlana/SED Winged C dilemma which I'm sure you're all aware of. You can find the link to our website at the bottom of my posts in my sig line. We currently have 1 amplifier model that's ready to be built to order. This model is our Classic Classic model and bears a striking resemblance to the Marshall Super Lead plexis of the classic era. Hopefully within the next 6-8 months, we'll be releasing our Modern Classic model, which is a model we're not releasing any details on yet until it's ready for manufacturer...just rest assured this model is guaranteed to be a hit. We're also working on our Black Death Overdrive, which is a 100% all valve overdrive utilizing a 12AX7 preamp tube, and NO CLIPPER DIODES!!! This will be one of the most versatile valve overdrives on the market...everyone from the classic guys to the bone crunching thrash guys are sure to love it. Hopefully that one will be ready for release come this spring 2010. In the meantime, I look forward to conversating with everyone here as well as helping out with troubleshooting pesky gear and amp problems. Feel free to PM me with technical questions as I would be more than happy to answer them and help you get your ailing gear back up and on the road.

Good to see you here Jon,
As a relative amp novice with a few builds under my belt i,ve already found your posts informative & helpful ,although i can find my way around the inside of an amp ok my theory is somewhat lacking. Good to see someone put theory into language we can all understand. Hope all goes well with your business venture & i wish you the best of luck. Ian. |

Re: Hello from Wilder Amplification
Thanks for the warm welcome guys. While I do run a business I just want you to know that I'm not here to spam my products in any way. If I can offer a product or a service that fits someone's needs, then I will post up accordingly. But I enjoy those who are willing to learn the so-called "black magic" and "rocket science" behind valve amps without expecting you to buy anything from us, and hopefully weed out and dis-spell the piles of misinformation available on the internet.

Re: Hello from Wilder Amplification
The kind of service you're offering is something really cool; not many will do it, so pimp it all you want--you obviously know your stuff Jon!

Re: Hello from Wilder Amplification
Hey Jon. I've got a question for you, one that I honestly have no idea about and would like an explanation on (perhaps even an in-depth one, if you end up having time). I'd like to know the differences between Class A and A/B amps, y'know, like the wattage differences, no biasing, etc. You seem to have the knack!!

As far as my shop...this is all being done out of my house at the moment as I'm just getting it fired up. I've built/worked on my own shit for a lot of years and have decided to offer it to the general public as well.

Re: Hello from Wilder Amplification
I gotta say when Layne died it deeply saddened me. He had more talent than I think he knew.
It's funny because when AIC hit the mainstream, everyone claimed them to be "grunge" and "defining the seattle grunge sound", yet they weren't even close! Hell listen to their unreleased shit, like "Social Parasite", "Killing Yourself", or hell...the whole "Heroin" album for that matter and you'll see that they were actually glam metal! And the misnomers that Layne sang like Kurt Cobain...fuck I would NEVER give Kurt that much credit...apples to oranges, night & day...Layne was hands down one of the best vocalists out there. He had a very diverse vocal range low to high and he could sing live just like he could in the studio. Love Hate Love - the ending part - is some of Layne's best work. And don't even get me started on Mad Season.

Re: Hello from Wilder Amplification
I fell in love with AIC right as they grew to popularity in the Grunge scene. First song I heard was 'Would?' from the Singles soundtrack. When Grunge died out, more or less, and the various mega bands involved moved on (except for Nirvana, of course), I feel AIC was sort of confined to a sense of 'yesterday'. Only after the death of Staley did they seem to have a profound effect on modern music, i.e. bands claiming them as one of their 'primary' influences. I'm glad Jerry didn't give up and he reunited with Kinney and Inez (who's an incredible bassist; think 'No More Tears'), and William is an excellent vocalist who can also play. Kinda reminds me of the 'Van Hagar' days, when Sammy could play all the cool rythms behind Eddie, instead of just the solo over the bass.
Soundgarden was more Industrial, Pearl Jam was more Folk, Nirvana died with Grunge, Smashing Pumpkins were Emo. Alice in Chains was the definitive heavy Seattle sound, and they have endured despite a 14 year layover. The new album is great.
