Tuners

Out of curiosity, what is your opinion of the tuning mechanisms you've used over the years? I have my LP, which I have considered swapping the tuners for something better than the standard ones, but I never gave it much more thought on it past that. What do you gents think?

Re: Tuners

I am firm believer in Sperzel Tuners (trim-lok), that would be my first choice. Then Schaller M6's, they are great looking and last long. Last choice Grover Rotomatics. These are the only tuners I have experience with.

Re: Tuners

The only tuners I've ever had a problem with were the crappy things on the first Les Paul copy I had. The used to fall off the peghead.

After that, the guitars I've had have all had decent Gotoh, Grover, or Schaller tuners, which have all performed marvelously. I have no additional experience with "cheapo" tuners.

Re: Tuners

From a utilitarian perspective, almost any fairly decent tuner will do. As long as you tune up to pitch even the cheapest ones won't slip. When people have tuning problems they automatically suspect tuners when, 90% of the time, the problem is with the nut.

Having said that, I have either Schaller or Sperzel locking tuners on all my guitars except one, and only because they make string changes much easier and quicker. I bought two sets of GFS locking tuners to put on a couple of SX strats and they work just as well as the higher priced stuff. I think I paid $29 a set for them.

Re: Tuners

anything Korg really.

My dad has this tune which is like 25 years old, and it still works perfectly.

But now I bought my first tuner and it is a KORG DTR-1000.

Re: Tuners

Sperzels are solid... I have had grover deluxe tuners that fell apart after two months and they sent me a new one under warranty..

I was actually inquiring about the tuning mechanisms on our guitars!

I've always had Sperzel tuners as well. +1. Not expensive and bullet-proof

Re: Tuners

I have had the best results with Grovers.

I do not have a locking system on any of my guitars and have heard nothing but good things about Sperzel.

Yeah, I see that.

Maybe if you had used the term machine head...

The original post. I didn't think I needed to be clearer than that!

It was pretty clear to me. I have always liked Schallers but I always changed out the original tuners on my Les Pauls to Grovers until my most recent Les Paul. The original Klusons seem to be working pretty good. To my shock. I have a backup set of Grovers ready, but if it ain't broke....
