Do I need a Reinforced neck?
Hey guys, I was looking at the Saga Flying V kit. Some of my friends have bought kits from them, and are quite impressed. Our bassist got their P-Bass kit. He loves it. My friend got their les paul kit, and plays it more than his gibson les paul. Anyways... I want to get this flying v kit, and put a Floyd Rose in it. Make a very metal guitar, you know? I know that Ibanez guitars, and others that come with a floating trem come with a super strong neck. Would I need to get a neck among those terms if i wanted a floyd, or would the stock one be enough?

Re: Do I need a Reinforced neck?
You'd have to do some extra routing to get a Floyd in there. A Kahler on the other hand would mount direct to the body with no extra routing. I'm personally not a fan of Kahler trems though, but that would work.
My only thought would be is that either tremelo, Kahler or Original Floyd would cost more than the guitar and all the parts. Two legit pickups and quality tuning pegs would be more than the guitar and all the parts. It looks kind of junky to me, I would just go for a used Gibson V or even an Epiphone V. Sometimes you can find those V's with the good trem's already on them and for the price they would be worth it once you would've upgraded any of the parts. The quality of the wood would be much better as well, plus, no bolt on. Plus, you're going to have to route the neck for the locking nut because I know those tuners will shift. Depending on the wood grain and how good the neck fits into the body will have an impact on how it stays in tune when you whammy. If your friends got them at least you have a good basis for comparison and you can maybe judge from those how the V would come out. If you and your fiends like them though, that's really all that matters. On a side note, did you still need those part values for that HM-2? I just posted them on your other thread. Sorry for the delayed response.

Re: Do I need a Reinforced neck?
My friends have some of their products. I would honestly say that my friends P-bass is more than comparable to an American Fender model.

Re: Do I need a Reinforced neck?
I guess I was just wanting a Guitar with a floating trem and tuning stability. I don't want to pay very much though. Do you have any suggestions? I could always get an Ibanez.

Re: Do I need a Reinforced neck?
I don't know really... You may be able to find a deal on a decent guitar like that maybe on CL every now and again. Whatever guitar you get, if it's a Floyd Rose, it's gotta be an Original Floyd Rose. The licensed Floyds are pretty awful and made from cheaply machined pot metals. The parts will break easy and won't last long, plus the tuning issue as well. You might be able to find an old Strat with a Floyd. Kahler trems are ok too, I just don't like them personally. They can fit on any guitar without having to route any wood out.

Re: Do I need a Reinforced neck?
Kahlers don't settle well with me, they are easy to install to any guitar, but don't have good tuning stability especially if you use the whammy. If I were you, I would buy a guitar already routed for a FR, or has a licensed FR, and replace it with an original Floyd rose. Make sure the licensed FR is based on the original FR, and not an ibanez bridge.
On the kit you posted, you would have to route the FR and cut a new nut. You may have to replace the entire neck, because the truss rod may not be able to handle a FR well.

This. It's all or nothing for me. When I play a V, it's a stringthrough or a hardtail. When I want a tremolo, I pick up a Jackson or ESP V. You are buying a bargain kit for a reason, I suppose. Paying for the proper services to score a real FR and have someone TRULY competant to route the FR and install the locking nut will likely cost what you put into the guitar. I'm pretty wary of those homebuild kits, but I suppose with a little luck and research you get what you pay for or maybe come out ahead. It's when you apply the savings to make the guitar something it's not is when you lose.
