Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

Used Les Paul Specials and Les Paul Studio's are the cheapest typically. A Studio is like a Custom except it has none of the extras, no binding on the neck or body, one less inlay, no split diamond and no nitrocellulose over the paint. Other than that it's a Les Paul. The Specials are good too if you like the flat top, they have no carved maple tops like the other Les Pauls.
New Studio's aren't that expensive, about $1000.

Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

If you're after a decent les paul at a low price -
Then get an early 80's Japanese copy - Greco, Burny, Tokai, Fernandes, Orville etc..
Some have many of the features of customshop gibsons - i.e long neck tenon, solid maple top, solid mahaog back, fret edge binding, gotoh hardware etc...
I own and 82 burny les paul and it's far better than the production line les pauls i've played/owned.
If you want a decent Gibson, try before you buy - you'll find a gem.

Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

What is your definition of cheap? Some people say $500, others $1000. Personally I would never buy a Les Paul lower than a Classic at any price - Studios, Jrs, Specials, whatever are not my bag.

Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

If it absolutely must be a Gibson, then a Studio is probably the cheapest model you'll find that still feels like a Les Paul.

What do you consider "relitively[sic] cheap"?

Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

Yeah, this is kind of an oxymoron. Gibson doesn't make and great cheap guitars, especially new. I'd look into a mid 90's Special or Standard.

Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

My '93 studio is a great player - black as night, maple cap, nice thick neck, mirror knobs, ebony board, grover tuners, Gibson alnico pickups (one classic 57, one Burstbucker), high quality wiring. Cost me $1100Aus a couple of years back.

Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

Like my Studio just fine. Always been my main rig, so if you gotta go with a 'cheap' Gibson (which there is no such thing) get a Studio.

Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

Studios are nice, but inflation has put them at the price point where I believe Standards should be. If you are considering pouring $1200-1400 into a new Studio, consider a used Standard instead (though a $1300 Standard in decent condition seems hard to find on eBay right now for some reason).

Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

Hi all,
As a Les Paul collector I'd say a studio is why Gibson made that model. It can be had cheap for a Gibson. But play a few because some will be better than others. I once lined up four and took turns and each had something I didn't like. But like the member said-cheap and Gibson does not fly. I see plenty of guys playing the classic. I would say that it looks good and is on the lower end of the price range. One thing that a lot of guys have to do is get a cheaper Gibson. I would never take a couple of mine to a gig. So when you find one-if it's a Gibson-you should let us know which one is best. If you ever find a LE Epiphone from 95 -99 try it. It's my secret weapon. It has f holes and sounds like a Thinline Les Paul. Good luck really. It's not easy looking around when guys are trying to sell you crap. The ebay route is logical if you are into it. Stay away from GC if possible. Cash talks loud now days. Don't get ripped. Ask guys here before you pull the trigger on a deal.

Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

My first Gibson LP was a Special with P90's and I got it for $800 used. I love that thing more than my Studio, but the style of music I play doesn't work that great with the P90, even though that's a great sounding pickup. I want to put the P90 sized Super Distortion in it and make it scream. I got the Studio brand new for $1000 even. Too bad GC is all messed up now and won't give out as many deals since the economy sucks.

Re: I'm looking for a great and relitively cheap gibson LP

I would recommend the LP Studio, BUT!!! if poss get an early 90's one as they used an ebony board on those, I have one as does the other guitarist in my band, his is a '92 mine a '93 and compared to the 'new' batch of Studio's they rock!

@Frankie

Are you selling that Standard as the pic suggests? I.e. with humbuckers installed and spare P90s too?

Nope, I actually sold it Friday for $1400. The P90's were long gone.
