Re: Strat suggestions?

I only have one Strat.
Its a 1996 Aniversary Edition Lonestar..
I too,, have enjoyed watching and listening to David Gilmour...
Hence,,, I dumped out the Lonestars pickguard and electronics.
Added a few other features that are very Un-Gilmourish..
But do run the Active EMG DG-20 Setup...
It Is EXCELENT!

Neat coin that Fender laid in the backside of the headstock..

That axe goes from wisper to scream.
Very versitile and amp & effect friendly....
To get back to Gilmores tones,, watch him and you will see he plays most any setup you or I could imagine..
Untill I seen the Division Bell Tour in Pontiac Michgan..(Excelent and Memorible)
I never really knew just how much he accually does with a lap steel..

Re: Strat suggestions?

He's a pedal steel master! Uses a smart tuning as well to get both major and minor chords.

That's a great looking strat.

The 'Echoes' lead tone (especially that funky jammy solo) is so raw...so perfect...I think it's very attainable via strat + JCM900 + pedals.

Gotta try more strats! I'm scouring local shops and Craigslist for the right used one.

Thanks for the kudos on my Strat..
I sort of lucked out on that one...
I bought it new at a local shop.
As I walked in and said hello to the owner..
He knew I had been looking for a decent AM Standard..
He said,, Did you check out the new Lonestar on the wall yet?
Wich one I replied..
He said,, That Shoreline Gold one on the top row..
That confused the be'diddles out of me..
Now I am color blind to the blue violet spectrum...
All I seen was a battle ship gray one, that was new to the shelf.
Its really a unique color..
Its painted at the factory in about 6 layers..
It flip-flops from gray to silver from silver to gold, depending on the type of light or how much hits it..
I have nearly had my Black 73 Tele painted to match..
But would hate to cover all the road scars it has earned...

Re: Strat suggestions?

Battle scars are great. You get your first one and it's a kinda sad moment, but then you tell yourself it's 'customized' and forever be able to tell it's 'yours'.

Thats one reason I like my rusty hardware! Though, the big knick in the neck I could do without...then again, how would I know I'm at the 5th fret!?!?

Re: Strat suggestions?

Try the MIM Jimmie Vaughan Strat. Read the reviews on Harmony central. I bought a clearance one from MF for $499. It's got a great neck, a blast to play. I've probably had 15 strats and this is my favorite. Granted I've changed a lot of things since I got it, but I always do. I always change to the Callaham bridge.
They make I huge difference in tone. And I put in a set of rio grandes. The guitar plays and sounds great and I only have about $800.00 in it.

Re: Strat suggestions?

I'm also an LP lover, but wanted a different sound.
I recently built 2 Tele's and 2 Strats. All with Warmoth bodies and Fender Am Std or Dlx necks. I used Wilkinson trem bridges.
The Vintage White one has Di Marzio Heavy Blues II, 54 Pro, and Virtual Solo in the neck/mid/bridge. The Fiesta Red has Di Marzio Area 58, Area 58, and Area 61 in the neck/mid/bridge.
Both these guitars play and sound great at a lesser cost than buying a new Am Std Strat. Best part, you get to pick from a crap load of finishes.

Re: Strat suggestions?

I've played an American Standard for 6 years now (only recently switched over to an Epiphone Sheraton II, but still play the Strat). Before I only played Pauls. I swore by them. Then I bought a Standard and I love that guitar. The sound is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! The tone is so flexible, you can change the feel of a song with a flip of the selector. Very playable, not too heavy, action is great... I could go on and on.

The ONLY gripe I had about it was this:

It didn't come with a floyd rose, so, say when I bent the third string and then played a note mid-bend on another string, that note was flat. BUT, I have never been a fan of whammy bars in the first place, so I took it off the guitar, flipped her over, took off the panel and tightened the bridge screws down, so it doesn't move a millimeter now. I love the stock pick-ups, I love the stock everything now that I battened down the hatch on that sucker. And I agree with you, a few dings makes a guitar yours. I'm a player, not a collector, so I'd route out a vintage gold top to fit in some larger electronics if I knew it would sound better.

Re: Strat suggestions?

I'm going to try and get back into a strat after I sell this 1974x clone I'm working on selling. At one point, I was offering a G&L ASAT tribute I had up for sale and someone offered me an old Powerhouse strat from the 80s. It uses the same circuits as the Clapton boost, but with a couple of resistors to make it half of the boost of the Clapton boost. They are mexi made, but looked like a 60's reissue type strat.

If I can't pull that off, I'm going to start with a USA Roadhouse or USA Lonestar strat...before they moved their production to Mexico. I really like the Texas Specials sound.

As for highway ones, I find that the first year models are incredibly superior to the newer ones. I've owned a 2002 and a 2003...I regret giving up that 2003 model...it was a beauty of a guitar.

Re: Strat suggestions?

I love the Amer Deluxe. The CSN pups are awesome. The whole guitar is top notch. A real joy to play.

I am not a big fan of signature guitars and I've never bought anyone's signature model, but the Eric Johnson strat is unbelievable. You should give one a try.

Ultimately, I would totally go used. Ebay, craigslist...I do a lot of used shopping on Guitar Center's used site ( Guitar Center ) You could spend hours looking at stuff on here. I've bought lots of things from all over the country.

Also, if you have a Guitar Center or a Sam Ash in your city, go in and ask a sales guy to search their used inventory for what you are looking for. What's on Guitar Center's used site is only a fraction of what they have used. Sam Ash doesn't have a used site, but they also have a gigantic inventory of used gear.

Finally, take a look at Japanese strats. I know you want American, but the Japanese strats are excellent...especially if you can find a deal. During the 80's, the Jap strats were held in fairly high regard.

Let me know what you pick up!

From the tour I seen..
July 15, 1994 - Pontiac Silverdome, Pontiac, MI, USA
Set I: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5), Learning To Fly, High Hopes, Take It Back, Coming Back To Life, Sorrow, Keep Talking, Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2), One Of These Days
Set II: Speak To Me, Breathe, On The Run, Time, Breathe (Reprise), The Great Gig In The Sky, Money, Us And Them, Any Colour You Like, Brain Damage, Eclipse
Encore: Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb, Run Like Hell
Notes: First time "The Dark Side Of The Moon" played live in its entirety since 1975. Footage from "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" Tour used for "On The Run"; crashing airplane prop also used during this song (the plane would be used at all subsequent indoor DSOTM shows). Footage from 1970's DSOTM tours used during "Money" and "Us and Them".

Foot Note...
I got to see them in Detroit Michigan in 1973..
The Division Bell Tour shined a whole new outlook on me tward Gilmours performances..

you really do need kinda weak single coils to get close to his tone..same with a lot of Jeff Beck stuff

Bjorn has a lot of time invested in that site...great info.....he also nails his tone pretty well

Re: Strat suggestions?

I saw Roger in '00 and '07. Great times, though he was using a backing vocal track in '07. No way he was karaoking in '00. Very croaky. Doyle Bramhall III did a good Gilmour, but as we all know, no one can touch Dave's magic feel. Wish I could have seen Dave and Rick before Rick died but they never came to the Midwest (why would they?).

I have got to see Waters three times in the last few years..
A good friend is part of a network of fairly unique Floyd fans..
Really all thay have to do is show up at a show, and someone has tickets for them..
I have only paid for my own ticket to see Waters once, and that was just because I felt bad about accepting it without putting anything back..
My buddy here flys to the UK to be with his friends there often..
Usually they try and string him with them for a few shows..
My opinion,,, screw going back to work,, ride with em..
But we have to pay the bills..
My opinion to Guitar work at Waters shows..
They do a good job, but it generally takes two great guitarist to do what Dave does by himself..
Amaised also,, the use of Les Pauls when they do..
Its a great show,, but definetly different than a Floyd show..

So are you gonna hook a brother up or what??? haha :3) Dave is my guitar (and long hair) idol! I'm happy he seems to have found his 'balance'.

How does one get into this special club? They gotta need someone to keep the tea warm, right?

Dave likes Whities!?!?! Dang, that solidified him as my #1! Hopefully you went 48 cheese and 48 jalepeno! Post-gig not much beats a billion sliders. Please post some more 'human' tidbits like this...Gilmourish.com does not supply David's fav. beer or burger! You know what brand he smokes or smoked? My friend and I are working on a Floyd-inspired LP. 5 tracks (WYWH style), one for each member of the band. We were originally inspired by the passing of Syd and Rick. Syd's track is called "See Chords" (named since he apparently wigged out on stage and stood there frozen only strumming a C chord incessantly while the rest of the band tried to play "around" it) and Rick's is called "Wright Left" (lyrics are all Floyd song titles that allude to Rick going to the 'Great Gig in the Sky'). Yet to finish the Dave, Rog and Nick inspired songs...hope we never have to!

Les:

I really love my 57 re-issues. I have owned some older strats in the past and I think they really capture the feel.....the sound on the other hand could be better. Lace sensors or lollar pick-ups/ something along those lines is what you will eventually put in what ever you decide on unless its already had something done to it.

I have also some friends that snagged some older squiers/mim standards for low dollar and hot-rodded them out and man, for the money it hard to beat those "beaters"!

Good luck on the hunt!

Hot-rodding a cheaper instrument sounds interesting...ever had experience with a frankenstrat? Or a build-your-own? That could be fun. I've been trolling the used market, nothing has come up that I can't pass up...yet.

Re: Strat suggestions?

Yeah I kinda snickered at them when I first saw one. Then I played on a few and thought to myself....one day I am going to throw one of these babies together. Pretty cool beater. Most of the players use them in Nashville bars. If it gets trashed or stolen...throw together another one!

There have been a bunch of these around me lately. Maybe the time is right!

Re: Strat suggestions?

Hi LesPaulopolis,

What do you think about a mexican strat wich you can upgrade !
I Did'nt liked strats at all till a few years ago, i loved lp's, till i bought a restored fender strat, it was a mexican one, it had a good tone, neck and price, but still i did'nt lked strats, then i started to like hendrix and i bought a fuzzface and a chorus/vibrato, and of cource i played my strat again, kicked the fuzz in an stared to play thru my marshall VM, and i just loved it, i changed the pickup's for some USA fender pickup's and it just was wonderfull, even beter than some USA strat's (Not all the usa's but it sounded better to my ears the a deluxe)

But i am still an LP guy for 70%

Re: Strat suggestions?

Saw Steely Dan last night and Walt was playing a strat...god it was bad tone. Sounded like a stock beginner-strat, really 'boingy', 'thin' and 'tinny/metallic'. Not lush at all (until he kicked on his chorus/slow flange). Expected better from Walt. Then again, he's only their rhythm guitarist. Funny thing though, the lead player was sporting a LP style custom built boutique axe and his tone was pretty great. Where's your pride, Walt???

Re: Strat suggestions?

About a dozon or so years back,, I took the wife and kids to Six Flags ,Sea World, And the Rockhall in Cleveland..
We stayed on the 16th floor of a Holiday Inn Thursday Friday and Saturday..
When leaveing the hotel Sunday morning, as usuall if your on the top floors you wait for the elevator.
One of the band that played the weekend at the hall was bringing down there guitars..
I spotted a new Gibson case like mine and asked what model, year and top was on the Paul he had there..
Oh its basickly a new standard but with a decent looking top , he said..
You should see it..
He opend the case, and the book matched 3-D tiger stripe jumped right out at me..
He said,, take a good look, its airbrushed..
But the people in the crowd never know it!
Nice Artwork...
One thing for sure, thats aproximetly 1 square board foot of carved maple top, can be some of the most expencive wood in the world..
