First check the neck relief, maybe the truss rod needs loosening.

if you're not sure on how to adjust neck tension and how to tell if you have raised frets, I'd take it to a shop for a good setup.

try raising up the action (bridge) this usually does the trick, though if still buzzing take it to a tech don't attempt to adjust the truss rod yourself, though truss rods rarely need adjusting.

You need to cut off all the strings with pliers, then get a big bastard file and run it longitudinally up and down the frets until they are only just above board height. Use some rough emery paper across them to shape what's left. Once you've done that, take off your truss rod cover and put the biggest allen key you can fit into the end...twist it until it gets really tight, then keep levering it a bit more (if the board springs off, just glue it back in place)Restring, then raise the bridge until you can get your fingers under the new strings.

Job done. Should be fine with no more fret buzz.

Or......You could go to a luthier and get it done right.

Hmm, that's a little extreme.

Does it buzz on all frets?
If not, can you tell which fret it's hitting?
Is the neck back-bowed...or perfectly straight?

If it's buzzing at the first fret, then you may need a new nut (happened to me). Anywhere else and you can probably do it yourself without much trouble...unless one or more of the frets need levelling, then a pro is in order.

Re: How to set up my les paul ? (my strings are buzzing no matter what size i use)

This is a genuine tip.

Get a black marker pen and wipe it across the frets in the that seems to be causing the problem. Then do it for another 3 up/down the board from that point.

String up again (standard tuning will do), then gently start string bending from the last fret marked (down the neck obviously). The string action will wipe the high area free of pen and you can see where the problem lies.

Set up comes from knowledge and practice. In general, you tweak the bridge, adjust the rod, tweak the bridge, adjust the rod etc....Until it is at the lowest point with no (or little) buzz. From there, ther frets are the next step (unless you have a banana/corkscrew- shaped neck, then you'll never set it up!).

It's up to you; but be warned, if you start to file frets/shape them, you can move the problem elsewhere easily. I can do it (as can others), but that comes from practice. In this case, I would suggest, once you have found the problem, take it to a luthier and let him deal with it.

Good luck.

Ouch!

Do NOT do this. This is bad advice, especially without a proper diagnosis.
There are many more steps missing in the above for a proper fret dress.

Some people may not get the sarcasm in the post.

Re: How to set up my les paul ? (my strings are buzzing no matter what size i use)

Whoa whoa!

No filing allowed! The first and only thing you need to do is if the Neck is straight the easiest was to do this is: press on the first & thirteenth fret (use a capo on the first fret if you have one), then sight the Neck from the side, look to see if the distance between the bottom of the string and the top of frets is about the same distance on the frets in between the first and thirteenth. If it appears that it looks like the top of the frets bow away from the string in an arc (At the ninth fret) then the neck is in Relief or the truss rod is too loose. If the frets appear to bow towards the string then the neck is in Tension or the truss rod is too tight. You have to get this distance the same as much as possible.

You said its Les Paul? don't even think about filing the frets, cause if you goof it could cost you some big bucks. The reason being is you're not just going to pay for a re-fret you also have to pay to have then neck re-bound to have it done correctly. I'm not really a Les Paul fan but its very few times that I have seen an LP with real bad Buzz problems, so hope a Truss Rod adjust should cure it. IF you don't know how to do it, then get a fresh set of string (Your gauge you like) and take to your reputable Guitar repair shop. And remember that if you change string gauge you will need to re-adjust, LP's are sensitive to tension changes.
