Love the positioning of the controls...
It's like the hallmark of fake LPs. Every time I ask myself do these guys just eyeball it? They never heard of a friggin template?!

Re: Anyone here own a Chibson?

Not yet. But I plan to get a couple soon.
Why? Cause I think they're great objects to learn how to do fretjobs, solder electronics etc.
AND, I can't afford a real Gibson. I also think the Gibson's are overpriced.
And no, I don't give a f**k about the ethics or moral issues of buying a copy.

Re: Anyone here own a Chibson?

Go read the nitro thread about Gibsons being overpriced. Honestly you can get an entry level gibson for like $799 new.

Any electric guitar wold sound exactly like that one with all that processing done.

I'd play an Epiphone over a Chibson every day of the week. Someone buying an Epiphone I can understand ... someone buying a fake Chinese knockoff I can not.

Oh, and @ hellride ... bro, your Chibson will not look like a Custom ... in person, it'll look much more like your avatar. A better alternative (while still keeping the price to a minimum) would be something along the lines of this (there are a few options ... if you don't like this particular model, there are others ... all of which are affordable, and all of which will be better guitars) ...

Re: Anyone here own a Chibson?

These are my reasons for buying a Chibson (I copied them from a post I made in another thread):

1 I'm NOT interested in used guitars. I want a brand new one.

2 I don't want a Vintage or whatever cause I don't like the way the head looks. (Same with my Epi)

3 Love ESP's but the Eclipse says nothing to me.

4 I think these guitars are good to practice fretjobs, electronics etc on, instead of an more expensive one.

5 Most Important! I'll NEVER SELL A GUITAR OF MINE!!! So nobody needs to be worried about that.

Out of curiosity, have any of you guys tried a Chibson of late? The ones they put out now? You know, the chinese are closing the quality gap every day. They get better and better. For instance, they used to make the neck and head in two pieces with a scarfjoint. Not anymore. Or, not so often as before. That's only one thing.

You've got you points and fair enough but let me tell you from experience that you will still wish to have a better guitar and once you have that Chinese copy, you'll still want that real "les paul". Then you'll think "damn, I spent xxx money on this piece of shit instead of saving it for the one I really want...."
It's you money at the end of the day... but sooner or later you'll regret it... Fact!

Yes you WILL regret it. I lived in Taiwan in the 80's and can assure you that even though the Fantasia branded axe looked like an LP it was rubbish. All the knock offs were. You were much better off with an Ibanez or if you had a few more bucks a Tokai strat cop or even better an MIJ Strat.

Re: Anyone here own a Chibson?

Another problem with these is the stability of the wood. "good" brands follow this process because they cannot afford to destroy their reputations.

I do not question the quality of the labour in China, if these guys are good enough to work for Yamaha then they are good enough to build any guitar, what I question is the usual shortcuts taken by Chinese factories.

You would be better off with a Chinese Epi or Tokai - the resell value will be much higher. Personally I would ignore the buy new thing and go for a Korean guitar, they have really made wonderful guitars over the last 10 years.

Re: Anyone here own a Chibson?

I've had the chance to hold and play a couple of these counterfeits (if there was a different name on the headstock, I'd call them "copies"). In pictures, they appear to be rather close, as far as looks, colors, etc. But that's superficial, so it doesn't matter to me. What I DID notice was the craftsmanship.

On both guitars, the nuts were cut really high, the lower string slots were too big (they appeared to be cut for 11's or larger), and the material of the nut seemed to be hard plastic, as one seemed to chip rather easily.

The bridge and stop piece appeared to be the cheapest metal...something you'd feel on a cheap P-trap for your sink...you know the types that are chromed? It felt like that, but a little thicker. I won't even comment on the strings! LOL

The frets weren't too bad on one of them. They needed to be filed on the edges, as they were a little scratchy when playing up and down the neck. They also needed to be leveled. Once again, not too bad for a "brand new" guitar. The frets on the other guitar weren't totally seated in their respective slots. There was buzzing on most of the strings all the way up to the 15th fret. The buzzing wasn't subtle, by no means. And the bridge had to be raised too high to alleviate it...rendering the guitar unplayable.

Now, I'll share my observations with the most important parts of the guitar...the body and neck...from a wood quality standpoint. The neck felt great in my hands. It felt like my Epi Standard. The radius was perfect...for me. The body is the body. For the exception of a very slight difference in radius at the cutout, nothing stood out of place to me. BUT...the weight of the guitar itself seemed different...somehow. When I knock on my Epi's, as if I'm knocking on a door, I hear a certain "thud" that indicates a certain amount of density, or sonicness in the wood, a certain tightness in the grain...which is all indicative of a resonance in the wood that will add sustain and creaminess to your sound when plugged in. However, in the counterfeits, I felt no such energy. When I knocked on them, it reminded me of knocking on an insulated storm door...no energy, no vibration...just a superficial knock. I concluded that the wood must be the cheapest of Basswood or Poplar. I know for sure they ARE NOT MAHOGANY.

I was allowed to remove the neck pickup on one of them, where I looked at the tenon. On this guitar, I could see glue residue around the tenon, which led me to think that the neck didn't have that "virgin-tight" fit that other LP's have...mine and yours. If all of them are made this way, I would expect to see many of them in shops for repair of the neck joint alone. But the visible glue lines and residue also led me to believe that the energetic relationship between neck and body isn't there...robbing us of the vibration and sustain that we have grown to expect, at least me, anyway. And while I had the neck pup out, I looked at the cap. It was a very bright wood, somewhat soft (definitely NOT Maple), with a very thin veneer glued on. In fact, there was a visible gap between cap and veneer about 3/4" long where the veneer wasn't glued on.

The finish was rather beautiful though. It closely resembled the "desert burst", which is my favorite. But it was encased in a cast of Poly. NO THANKS!!!

The electronics are obviously assembled without the slightest care of quality of sound. I couldn't identify the pots, although they are probably Alpha's. The caps, who knows??? The wire itself was cheap...something you'd find at Radio Shack on the clearance table. Looking at the solder joints, it was easy to see that they use stranded wire in the harnesses...not solid core.

The tuners weren't bad...probably the best things on them. They are Grovers, probably the same tuners that came on my Epi. So, it's not a total failure.

So, I walked away thinking this...

Counterfeit, by definition, is something made to deceive one into thinking it is the real thing. These guitars are just that....deception! At the bare minimum, they aren't even a good platform to transpose a good body/neck into a terrific guitar. The wood is, at best, mediocre and not very toneful, and the quality and preparation for finishing leaves a lot to be desired. That's probably why they come with "hot" pickups. A lot of us get Epi's, Jay Turser's, Axl's, Agiles, etc. to have a platform to make a good guitar even better. We upgrade the tuners to our likings, the harness so that we have the best possible signal transfer and control, and the pickups so that we voice our guitars the way we need.

So, to make a good guitar great, we MUST first start with a good body/neck. These counterfeits, in my humble opinion, don't offer us that starting point that we need for great sounding, great playing guitars.

Re: Anyone here own a Chibson?

There are many LP style guitars for those who can't afford a Gibson, such as Epi. When one is unwilling to pay the premium on a Gibson, yet refuses to content himself with a distinct, non-Gibson copy, then that says a lot about the person and his motives, IMO... Namely the kind of person who buys a $19,000 Pontiac Fiero with a Ferrari body kit installed... In short, a tool who is more obsessed with the image of something than its actual merits.

An Epi "looks" fairly close to a Gibson. It also comes with a warranty. A Chinese counterfeit has no warranty and the buyer has no recourse when it turns out to be a lemon, or not what the picture promised, or had defective drywall inside that gave him the AIDS. It doesn't feel the same, and to those with knowledge, it doesn't look right either. That's a boatload of ****ed up priorities to get a headstock inlay that otherwise lies beyond reach.

Re: Anyone here own a Chibson?

I've got an Epi LP standard. And I love it. Gonna change the pu's though since they're not so good. Don't like the headstock on it. I think it's ugly. But overall, it's a damn fine guitar.
Got a BaCH explorer to. That guitar (stock) is more or less a Gibby copy. The pu's are changed on it and so is all hardware.
Imo it's not less ethical to take a well known design (more or less) and put your own name on it. "Gibson doesn't own the single cut design" That might be. But 95% of all singlecuts (not counting tele) are referred to as Les Pauls. And which company made the Les Paul guitar for starters? Yep, Gibson. Now, most companys alter the design somewhat to avoid getting Gibsons lawyers on them.
But often, those alterations are so subtle that an untrained eye cant tell the difference from the original. Sure, the chinese put the Gibby logo on their guitars and one can have opinions about that. I contacted one of these chines sellers to ask if I could have my own logo on the thing. (Chibson, in the sam font as the orig)
But to get that, I would have to by a whole bunch of guitars. Don't remember now, think it was something along the lines of 20-30 pcs. The reality is that there have ALWAYS been (and will always be) people that make and sell replicas, copys, counterfeits. In any field of manufacturing. In any part of the world.
I'm gonna buy me a couple and if you like it or not, well, I don't really care

Re: Anyone here own a Chibson?

I want to see 1 of these after a couple years when the edges of the body have come apart like wet cardboard.

why buy an obviously cheap fake when you could buy @ least an Agile for the same money? I hear they're good guitars and some people say they're better than Epiphone.Austin & Hondo make a good Chinese guitar too.

if you want to practice on guitar repairs just buy any old used beat up piece of shit @ the flea market.
I think you're trying to fool yourself & justify the purchase to us which ain't flying here.
if you were in the U.S. you would have been reported already. try making these same posts on MLP & see the responses you get.

but,whatever floats your boat.

A bit of a shame really, for the price of 2 of these you could probably snap up a used Tokai Japan...now that is a fantastic alternative to a Les Paul built to an incredibly high standard.

Re: Anyone here own a Chibson?

Gibson made a deal with the Devil so to speak ...

They taught the chinese and equipped them to make their guitars. With the Epiphone,,, they still have to pay Gibson .

Putting the Gibson logo on,,, they keep all the money.
I think its hilarious!
Sending Jobs offshore then getting bit in the ass!
They couldve put Americans to work. They chose to put othe country 's people to work. .
Even counties where we were enemies at one time like Vietnam.
To Honor Gibson and pay their insane prices.... dont think so....
Feel sorry for Gibson,,,, dont think so....

It happened to us in the tattoo world. We had a good business making tattoo machines.
We never farmed out shit to china. They up n stole the shit!
It would take us 10-13hours to make a machine. The price was 3-400 per machine. China reversed them and sell them for as little as 20 bux!

They could've made Epis in Tenn. But they wanted slave labor.

I love my Epis and they are great! I beat the shit out of them and they withstand the punishment and Never failed me in 15 yrs that i started buying them.

Im not a "label whore " and go after a solid deal! The Asians were taught by Gibson.
Yyyyeeeaaaarrrsss ago. They got it down!

And the quality is up there.

I have seen some beautiful chibsons.

I wouldnt buy one tho unless it? Was a licensed product because that lifetime warranty on the Epis is the same as Gibson.

I see you are in Sweden. Here in the US, those Chinese counterfeit Gibsons are illegal...they violate trademark and copyright law. Due to international trade treaties, they are probably illegal in Sweden as well, although the law is more likely to be enforced here in the US. Here, you risk having it confiscated and if you receive and distribute enough of them, possible jail time. I'm just pointing that out.

Re: Anyone here own a Chibson?

I just purchased a 2012 Standard. I have fought with myself for months over this purchase because I have an Epiphone that I felt was a very good alternative for the money, and it most definitely is a good value and a well built guitar. However, the pickups, hardware and wiring are utter junk and any contact with the body of the guitar while it's plugged in reverberates horribly through the body. It is also very obvious that the quality and density of the woods used is night and day. Sure it's a great guitar for $450 but it in no way compares to the real deal unfortunately but I sure did spend a lot of time trying to convince myself that it did. I personally would feel like an idiot trying to convince myself a chibson holds a candle to a Gibson.
