PIMP MY pRIDE!!

Ok so i have recently inherited (un-interesting story) one of my dream guitars - a black custom with plenty of character and dings!!

Its pretty beat up & been gigged a lot, has a nice feel to it but sounds pretty horrible so I am going to pimp it to be the rock axe it should be!!

The bridge is well worn & could do with replacing although the well worn look is cool the high E is now spaced weirdly, cracked mounting rings. I play heavier stuff and have a emg loaded les paul which I love but possibly going to look for pups something similar but passives - ideas?

Any ideas with pots etc they could prob do changing!!

Any ideas or suggestions let me know!!

Re: PIMP MY pRIDE!!

Pickup-wise, Id say either a Dimarzio Dactivator set or Duncan Distortion/Jazz combo. The DAs have an active-like sound, while the Duncans are just awesome high-outputxpickups.

And I say replace the pkckup rings for chrome ones and throw on chrome hardware and have a JohnSykes-esque fiddle.

For pots, CTS or RS Guitar Works, IMO.

Never played a duncan distortion but have heard good things!! Not a huge dimarzio fan in general but might have to check out some pics of the chrome pickup rings. Is there anywhere online that stocks them online - if I go that way?

Re: PIMP MY pRIDE!!

Looks pretty cool!! Will probably keep it looking a bit more traditional but don't mind it!!

On second inspection the nut also has a crack in it and will prob replace it at some stage. If cant get gibson replacement - What brands are good? Never had any replaced before?

Re: PIMP MY pRIDE!!

Nice axe! I love Black Customs and especially when they have some character. I have the SD SH4/SH2 combo in my Silverburst Custom, I'm pretty happy with the tone. Do you have any idea as to the year of the guit?

Re: PIMP MY pRIDE!!

The first thing I'd do is store every piece yanked for restoration in the event you want to sell.

If you have an active LP, you'll probably want this to be passive for more diversity. Figure out the pups to your taste. Meanwhile, I would suggest you grab a Tone Pros ABR/Stopbar set (you can figure out whether you want to keep the factory setup, or go black-nickle/black-black and get rings to match).

Re: PIMP MY pRIDE!!

+1 to Tonepros.
Anfd if you dont want the Dimarzios, I still second the Dist/Jazz combo, which is supposed to sound godly in a slab of mahogany.

Re: PIMP MY pRIDE!!

distortion's are my favorite assembly line pup

if you keep the pickups i'd redo the solder joints and swap the 350k pots for 500k or even 1meg. i still need to do that on my SG:/

Re: PIMP MY pRIDE!!

+1 on the 500k pots. Omcr again suggesting CTS or RS guitar works.

As for a nut, get a aGraphtec Tusq one.

Re: PIMP MY pRIDE!!

Its a 96 model..... i know horrid 90s gibsons!! its actually got a nice feel to it and thats the most important thing, as you can see cosmetically its in a bad way!! The one thing that I really dislike about it is it has had a few stickers on it, when you get light on it and you really look hard you can see where the adhesive had eaten into the paint - but then again it is when the light catches it and when you really look hard.

Yet to look at flebay but as for bridges the tone pros look pretty hard to get in australia, will have to order them online or I can get a gibson replacement nashville bridge. Are the tone pros a lot better? Just purchased some new mounting rings.

Pickups wise I will check out what MHD has to offer as I like the 5150s Rayne did for me. I am also very interested in the duncan distortions. Has anyone played the EMG H4 & H4a combo?

Re: PIMP MY pRIDE!!

Looks nice. Graphtech makes great bridges (in addition to nuts), dunno about down under access. I'd go with something lower output like Alnico Pro II but that is not EMG tone...

Re: PIMP MY pRIDE!!

What do you want to play. I design according to what you want to play and the gear you use. I would however recommend an Asylum plus with an A8 in the bridge and an A5 in the neck with a nice scatter.

I fitted my Orville Custom with a set of Wilkinson Zebras...
Ghetto? sure!... and the sound??? Let say you don't want animals or small children standing in front of that guitar plugged into my 2203...
