Top wrapping an lp

Still having a bit of distress over my lp. After practice today I realized that I'm not digging the tension on the strings of my lp so I decided to do a top wrap. How did it work? Not a difference....

The tail piece is to the deck, and it sounds different to my ears but it could be just the new strings. I'll see if it added sustain tomorrow when I can crank up an amp!!!

Anyway it looks cool!

Re: Top wrapping an lp

Ya I did one of mine awhile back

but I'm not sold on the difference if any, and I don't really get the science behind "easier bending" that's been alleged.
Could someone explain how that's supposed to work?

Ya it didn't work for me either, looks cool though right? I wouldn't get into the science of it though, it's full of contradicting opinions... I'm hoping at the least it adds sustain??? I'm switching to .9s tomorrow.

Re: Top wrapping an lp

Maybe try a hybrid gauge .009 to 46?
I may do that next change...

Nope, didn't help me any tone-wise, but my strings last a bit longer.

I feel a slight difference, the strings feel like there's less tension (obviously the tension is the same though), making bends seem easier.

The tension of the string is the same, but the total length of the string changes past the break point. The difference is minor, but noticeable if you're normally a strat player

Re: Top wrapping an lp

Won't the strings cause friction against the tailpeice, and leave some string marks (at least on the thicker strings?)

What I did with my LP to have a more open angle from where the string starts and lays on the saddle, was RAISE the tail peice a few milimeters.

No string marks, more open angle where the strings sit (pretty much the same as top wrapping).

Now, if it's because it looks cool? Well then... that's cool.

Ya man, I tried all that. I'm not worried about the looks so much as about the playability though, just wanted to try it. Didn't help, so plan b now....

Re: Top wrapping an lp

The theory is you can screw the stop bar right down to the body and the guitar sustains better. The longer overall string length gives a slinkier feel. I had my LP this way for awhile and found less sustain, slinkier action and wound strings went dull very quickly (put the kettle on ). Stringing the "normal" way gives more sustain a better "ring" and while the action is slightly tougher it's a lot easier to keep bends in tune...I managed it with still keeping the stop bar screwed all the way to the body.
I must stress this is what I found with my LP some of you other guys may beg to differ.

Thanks for the insight, I really don't know if I should keep the top wrap. I'm going to jam on what I have now until I put in the 9s to see how my tone sounds!!!!

No, I understand and agree...
The thing is, subjective questions like this are rather pointless as far as relevant discussion goes.

But then you DO often get the 'will I get better tonz with the pickguard off' type of troll threads, and that has happened sooooo many times over there that any type of subjective question becomes a playground for the cork-sniffers.

Even capacitor types will generate days worth of entertainment over there, my point is that it is such a matter of personal opinion that it really doesn't matter anymore. You are gonna do what you wanna do, just don't come here or go over there seeking approval in the guise of asking for someone else's opinion.

Kinda like 'do I get a Roland or a Line6' amp and the people here will bombard the OP with 'Get a 2203' type of reply for days. They will go out and buy a LineSux amp anyway...

It is even worse at HC and TGP, I was just posting some sarcasm...

I really don't understand this attitude at all. I'm not seeking approval or anything like that. As if im "hiding" a secret aggenda for approval, thats insane bro! I never done this before, its new to me and although I'm not asking for it help is much appreciated. This topic may be irrelavent to you but to me, it's a whole new thing that I'm learning.

I see what you're saying, and I know you're not directing anything negative to me, but like I said opinions, suggestions, and experience here is welcome.

I use these Elixir Custom Light's on my LP's, I love them, nice and easy to bend and you get the best of both sizes.

No disrespect at all intended, I am sure you are seeking detailed experience here. I hope you can find the answers you are looking for.

It is just that after years of questions such as this I have become a bit jaded and sometimes I think people who ask them cannot be serious. If you search over at MyLesPaul forum you can find literally thousands of different opinions on this particular subject. It was even funny to talk about it back in the '70's when I played in a band.

In 30 years you too will look back at this and grin...

Re: Top wrapping an lp

the top wrap makes it easier to bend, not because of reduced tension, ...but because of the reduced friction at the bridge due to the lesser angle the strings are breaking over the saddle......

thats the big difference....

then, it also adds a little sustain and defination due to the fact that the tailpiece can now be screwed down solid to the body. Sometimes this difference is more noticable than others,....but IMO, you can't go wrong with a top wrap

You should try some DR brand strings. I don't know if they have less tension or are just more flexible, but they sure do feel good.

I know you didn't mean disrespect. Check out the mlp on my top wrapping thread and you'll see the immediate trolling, and it could have been worse but you'll see that I didn't provoke anything. Let me know what you think, or don't look no biggie..

Re: Top wrapping an lp

Ok guys after I got back from work I changed my tubes in my Tiny Terror, and I was about to change my strings but I decided to play for a bit. To my surprise it now feels a bit "softer"! I'm thinking the strings settled in a tiny bit more. It's not a HUGE difference, but it's enough for me to try out this set up!!
