Re: My first Gibson
Wow, $3600 for a LP Custom. Prices sure have gone up, I paid less than half that for my two year old R7, but that was about 10 years ago.

Re: My first Gibson
Keep in mind that I was paying for a NEW custom from a LICENSED GIBSON DEALER, not used from someone else, off of Craig's List, or on E-bay. In contrast, I could have gotten one in almost MINT condition for less than $3,000, but I would not have had any warranties from Gibson at all. That alone was worth the extra $600 to me. For such an expensive instrument, I will take every advantage I can get.
Consider also that I did not just buy my JVM used from Guitar Center. I also paid an extra $150 for a 1-year extended coverage warranty from them because I had no idea what could happen with a used amp that I had never actually played on. So far, I'm very happy with the purchase, but it made everything better. Could I have gotten away without the $150 warranty? In hindsight, most definitely. Do I regret my extra expenditure? Not in the least. I think I did all right with this Gibson purchase. I like to think of it this way: Most places sell this Silverburst for $3,999. I only paid (after Discover Card Cashback Bonus) $3,550. If you look at it like that, I "saved" $450.

Re: My first Gibson
Day 1 Impressions
Damn that's a heavy guitar. Anyway, so I took it out and hooked it up to my Fender Mustang V amp. I put it on my AC/DC preset and man, what a sound. Immediately, I notice that a few strings are slightly off-key, so I quickly push the TUNE button and retune it. Problem solved. I proceeded to start playing some solo licks and I notice that the high strings seem unusually difficult to bend. Not impossible, mind you, but harder to bend than what I'm used to on my other guitars. Also, I checked and my intonation wasn't set. The bridge was set in pretty much a straight line. So I went and fixed that. Don't worry...I wasn't upset at all. I enjoy setting up my own instruments. It lets me feel like I've put my own touch to the instrument. Checked intonation using 12-fret and harmonics. Took the guitar by the local music shop and the guys there were plenty impressed. Let someone in the store who was rocking away on a Peavy 6505+ combo do some licks (properly supervised by me) and he loved it too. Dude's been playing for 4 years to my 1.5 and was seriously impressed with the instrument. Bought some strings in the .10-.46 weight and changed out my strings...forgetting that the stopbar tailpiece falls off without the strings holding it up. That certainly made string changes interesting. Next time, I'll remember to leave the outer two on, holding it up...change the inner 4, then change the outside last two. Luckily, I did not damage the guitar. *whew!* I'm letting the strings settle in over the next few days. I also changed the strings on my Hagstrom with Elixir Nano-web .10-.46, just so I'd have new strings all around. Pushed the Gibson through my JVM and thought I'd be impressed, but it was only marginally bigger sound than I get with the Hagstrom. The note definition was very clean. In my hands, I'm used to either a Fender Stratocaster, the Hagstrom, or my Partscaster. By contrast, the Gibson is BIG. It's easily twice as heavy as my other guitars, the neck is the thickest one I have. The Fender comes very close with the Maple neck, but it's not as heavy. The tuners on the Gibson seem huge compared to the other guitars, even the Partscaster with Schaller locking tuners. Now I'll be looking for an appropriate strap for the Gibson. It's such a nice axe, I wouldn't want it to fall off my leg at some point. All of the cheap ones look like ass, so I may spend some money to get a leather one. Gibson has a black leather one with their logo on it and the Custom inlay logo. Very simple. I think I like it. I wanted a silver one, but I think the guitar has enough silver.

Re: My first Gibson
Man, get strap locks!!!
The other thing is because its new and travelled it may be a good idea to get a proper setup done by someone that can adjust your neck. This may be the reason your E string was hard to bend, the neck may not be set right. The other thing with LP's is its easy to accidently adjust your bridge height while re-stringing it(watch those adjusters they turn easy), the bridge falls off as well when it is unstrung, so be careful. Dont scratch that baby. Get yourself a good wax for the body and some lemon oil or similar for your fretboard. I actually use Meguirs car polish on my guitar, cant recommend it enough. Have fun bro, Im so jealous, your LP shits on mine. Peace EDIT those 490/498 pups should scream get em to look at your pup height as well =) |

Re: My first Gibson
They DO push the JVM hard. What I said was that they weren't much different than the ones on my Hagstrom...which already push the amp nearly TWICE as hard as my Fender single-coils do. The Hagstrom pushes my amps to begin with, so that's not a slight on the Gibson at all.
The bridge with no strings on it seemed rock-solid. It didn't move at all and I never once touched the adjustment wheels. The strings seem to me to be at the exact same height the other strings were. Also, the strings that came on the guitar were probably the same ones that have been on it since it was built by Gibson. I noticed that the strings were almost "tied" at the tuning peg. When I do my strings, I use an S bend through the tuning peg with no pinching needed. The strings hold themselves through tension. I think pinched or tied strings look disturbingly ugly, hence why I wanted to clean it up with a new set of strings. And it wasn't just the high E string. When I'm doing the solo for AC/DC Shook Me All Night Long, I'm also bending the B and the D strings as well. They were all a little tough to bend. Even these new strings seem about as hard to bend as the old ones did, so maybe I just wasted my money on strings...but it was only $6. If they're just that hard to bend...then my fingers are going to get a very good workout, aren't they? LOL My Custom may shit on your LP, but I'd be willing to bet your playing skills shit all over mine. Which would you rather have: A decent guitar and mad playing skills or a really nice axe but you sound like an amateur playing it? The Gibson has almost no string buzz. I like that. My Hagstrom has lots of string buzz. The tech at the music shop said I should get it fret leveled, but I also think that the nut slots are too deep. The strings are almost touching the first fret. They don't, but they're that damned close. It takes almost no pressure to make it touch. I've been thinking about replacing it with a Graphtech XL nut. I can have them shape and install it when they do the neck setup. What do you think? On the body polish, I have Fender Guitar Polish and also a generic guitar body polish. But you're talking about using an actual car polish? Like a paste wax? And why would I use lemon oil on an ebony fretboard?

Double-check my last post, Soulcaster. I was adding things to it when you replied.

Any guitar polish is good. Yep I use car polish, the finish comes up thick and shiny and doesnt affect the paint in any way. Ebony is still a wood no matter how dense it is, it needs oil to preserve it. Just a wipe off lemon oil or even sesame oil will help keep it pristine, otherwise it will dry up and crack. I still think your neck needs to be set bud, or is the first time you have played with 10's? They should bend easily. PS consider gettin strap locks man, last thing you want is that axe droppin to the floor. GL |

Re: My first Gibson
First off buy Strap Locks.. Secondly, your scale length might be shorter on the Gibson, so the strings might have more tension hence the 'hard to bend' feel.
It's actually a good thing though, your fingers become stronger. |

Re: My first Gibson
Update: I weighed the guitar with a digital food scale. It weighs in at 9 lbs, 12-1/8 oz. Only 4 more oz and it would have made 10 lbs. So close...
And just for shits-and-giggles, I weighed my other guitars. Some of them suprised me, considering the Gibson LPC seems so much heavier than the others. Warmoth "Partscaster" Strat: 8 lbs, 1-1/4 oz Hagstrom Ultra-Swede SL-2: 7 lbs, 12-1/2 oz Fender American Stratocaster: 7 lbs, 9-1/8 oz Jasmine Jumbo Acoustic: 5 lbs, 6-1/4 oz 1920's Gibson Archtop: 4 lbs, 3/8 oz @ Söulcaster: The trouble with the bending was being caused by the tailpiece being screwed all the way down and all 6 strings were touching the back of the bridge saddle. I have since raised the tailpiece so that they just barely make clearance. Bends are a lot easier. Also, I put .10-.52 Slinky Top/Heavy Bottom strings on, but I don't think I like the thick, low strings like that. It feels a bit too much like my acoustic Jasmine (.12-0.56 strings, I believe). @ bulldozer1984: How much protection do straplocks provide when I never use a strap and I'm always sitting down in a chair when I play? And my fingers are strong enough for .10s now after months of playing. That's WHY I put .10s on all of my guitars in the first place. After playing these LPs, going back to my strats is too easy. I overbend on those sometimes, and they have .10s on as well.

Re: My first Gibson
That is one sexy guitar!!!
When I got my new LP Custom, the one thing I noticed was that the paint on the neck was kind of sticky, especially if my hands got sweaty. It was a little discouraging at first. It turns out that Gibson uses a nitrocellulose finish on their guitars, as opposed to poly finishes on most guitars. It's an organic paint (made from flax) with no clear coat. This can create a sticky feel. A couple of luthiers that I talked to said that to alleviate the stickiness, wax the neck regularly (I just use regular old Pledge) and it will get better as the paint ages. The wax helped with the stickiness and it did get better. (It took about 5 years, but it got better) Now I love it. So, if it starts to feel 'sticky', that is natural. Just wax the neck and wait for the paint to cure. Other than that, you have got one of the sweetest guitars of all time. Enjoy!!! I love Silverbursts!!! |

Nope. Pulled from savings to get it. I've never financed anything except my car.

Re: My first Gibson
One thing....
A Gibson should be easier to bend than a fender becuase of the shorter scale length. Less tension so easier bends. Another thing.... I know you are going to play it and enjoy it, but don't be obsessed about keeping it perfect. I recall I got a martin new, And treated it like a Ming vase for a while. Then I gigged with it and it, and then I gigged again and 300 gigs later....well it looks like it has done 300 gigs. BUT..... It plays and sounds better now. There is something about wearing a guitar in yourself....every ding and wear mark is form you playing it. I am not saying ding it up or be careless, but don't not take it out because you are sacred of marking it. Especially if you will never sell it. You should see my old SG I have had for 22 years.... Frets are rooted, I have worn into the fingerboard itself, it has done hundreds of gigs and it sorta looks like a bread board on the back. Good thing it's brown or it would look even worse. But I love that old axe, i look at it and it reminds me of the bands I was in and the gigs I did. I respect you want to look after it. I hate seeing abused guitars and reliced guitars just annoy me. Peace man, and again, congratulations. |
