ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

Hi guys. My oldest son is interested in a ESP Eclipse. I would like to ask your valued opinions, good and bad before we drive 3 hours to Chicago for a trial. Thank you.

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

Its a lot like a LP with a faster neck and weights less. I had mine for 2 weeks before I sold it. I couldnt get use to how much lighter it was. I wasnt crazy about the EMGs in it either. But I bought a new ESP Horizon that I love.

I've always been very underwhelmed with them when I played them man. What is he looking for? There are better options in the price range I'm sure.

Well Hunter, in addition to other makes, he has a Les Paul Studio. It sounds great but just will not stay in tune. He has been through several different types of tuners and other Hardware. So he thought that perhaps the ESP Eclipse would be the answer. I think he could find a older Les Paul Standard for $1800-$2000 or Custom for a bit more that will stay in tune if we shop around for them, maybe. The only Les Paul I had that stayed in tune was a 1980 Standard that had a tone deadening Kahler on it.

In short, he wants a Les Paul that can/will stay in tune when subjected to a technique like mine.

Any answers will be helpful.

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

Honestly, if he wants a Les, I'd recommend a Tokai or Edwards; something like that. The ESP feels more like a Jackson or something like that to me than a Les Paul. It is a lot lighter and faster than your typical LP.

My cousin has a Gibson Zakk Wylde custom that won't stay in tune either. I have no clue what it is, but it drives me nuts haha

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

I had the ec1000fr, fast neck, light weight and body thinner than a les Paul. They are cool guitars, I would look for second hand ones you can pick them up cheap. I would take a Gibson traditional or higher end over one anyway though.

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

If you want a shredder with slightly better upper register access and a Floyd, they're a good choice.

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

very good hard rock and metal axe. not a lot of range (but, that's a les apul anyway for you). if it's a vintage black one of the LTD's or a full ESP (not Ltd.) those have ebony fretboards and are nicer imo. I hate floyds though. That would be a deal killer for me personaly but, that's because i'm too fat and lazy to spend time setting them up propely so it's not Mr Roses fault

well....yeah they're intended for that type of approach actualy and they do sound more like a les paul but, the neck is like a 60's slip taper (or like an SG special or standard) and the floyd model i'm not familiar with PERSONALY. I know about them but, i hate floyds o i haven't used one.

they would suit him i think but, they aren't quite LP's. they have a thinner body but, they are solid too so they sound thicker and darker than the average les paul now because of the swiss cheese bodies.

my friend had an Ltd. EC1000 VB that i would have LOVED to own but. i would at least swap out that 81....i hate those pups. i'd put the 60 in the bridge and an 89 in the neck with a push pull pot.

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

I've been very impressed with my EC-1000 MGO. Les Pauls were always a bit bulky for me so I like the lighter weight and tummy cut. This model comes with SD Alnico II Pro pickups and the tonepros bridge/tailpiece. It's not a light nitro finish but I can say the fit/finish ranks up with the best I have seen. YMMV...

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

I have a Truckster which is (loosely) based around the Eclipse. Sounds and plays great although I was shocked to hear my stock passives on my PRS sound better than the EMG's on the ESP.
It is drop tinned to a B at the minute so doesn't get as much use as it could but I'm considering tweaking the truss rod and getting her back up to standard tune.

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

David, 90% of tuning problems come from an incorrectly-cut Nut. I had mine redone on my old Vintage Mahogany Studio with a new Delrin and it was a Night/Day difference in tuning stability.

The remaining 10% is improperly installed and/or old/defective strings!

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

Not sure what the nut is made of (it's black) but no problems with strings "hanging" in the nut like on the SG (which cost much more). I'm just saying - my gold top rocks...

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

What I personally find disturbing is Buying an $800 American Made Guitar that won't stay in tune because the Nut is improperly cut.

I guess they do better on the 4K guitars....

Re: ESP Eclipse Thoughts?

Get the nut checked out first. If fixing the nut doesn't solve anything, I recommend looking at the LTD Eclipses first, rather than going for the ESPs straight away.

Chances of you find a keeper from this lower-end line are quite high. Ironically, the ESPs Eclipses only have the Gotoh bridge and tailpieces, while the LTDs sports Tonepro's locking version.

Me? I love my Eclipse 1 FT and that's the one you want to go for if you really want an ESP Les Paul. It's the only model that has the same body thickness as a Gibson. All the rest are a lot thinner. But you can only get this model outside the US, thanks to the four pot setup.

Oh, and stay away from the abalone binding.
