Re: Question for strat users, regarding string gauge

Try loosening the truss rod to give about .010" relief at the 8th fret and float your trem a little higher I like mine 1/8" off the deck. My Strats are all in E Flat I use .009s on most them {Jimi} {Strat>Fuzz Face>Univibe>Octavia>Wah>Marshall Super Lead} but I have .010s on my '59 RI that I plug straight into my '59 RI Tweed Bassman {SRV}

Re: Question for strat users, regarding string gauge

OK guys, I'm done setting up the strat! It fought me like a champ the whole ****ing way through. I re-adjusted everything and I even used the micro-tilt function to maximize my action. I did have to use .09's, because the tens were making me uncomfortable. It just felt way too tight for me, I may be a pussy but I got a real good feeling strat now.

Thanks for all the help, you guys helped me come to the conclusion I was already suspecting. It seems like some of you guys dig .10's I just can't do it in standard with this strat. I wish you guys could play her, I think you would all really like it!!! Thanks guys!!

Re: Question for strat users, regarding string gauge

Who gives a **** if you're using .09s? You're using a Marshall JVM, hands down one of the most bad-ass amps ever produced in the world. That amp alone can get you laid. Then who's the pussy now?

+1....on all my Strats. Best of both worlds....slinky top end for easy bends, chunky chords and riffs with the heavier bottom. Once you put 'em on you will never consider standard gauge strings again. I even use 'em on my Lester, you have to be careful not to overbend though.

Jimi used 9's, BB King & Billy Gibbons used 8's even 7's (BG). You don't need heavy strings to get good tone, just a good guitar, well set up....oh and a Marshall valve amp.

Another vote for Hybrid Slinkys (or any 9-46 set) on a Strat, esp if you are used to 10-46 strings on a Gibson-scale guitar.

Re: Question for strat users, regarding string gauge

i dont like the idea of hybrid guages cuz you cant always count on them being available when you need them...in the store anyway.

i was playing .012's, and i could really beat the bag out of them, they were great. but it was so hit or miss at the music store, i had to switch back to 011's just so i knew they were always available.

i have a tendency to pull strings sharp reaching for big chords in quick passages, the 012s were perfect for this. and you do get used to the bends and runs with them. your hand will be strong...

the other upside, is when you pick up an acoustic, it plays like butter. its feels no different than your electric.

i guess i should start buying in bulk, i miss my 012's, it made me a better cleaner player.

i order my strings from juststrings.com and haven't got any bum ones
i use the ghs nickel rockers (same as rollerwound nickel when you get up to 12s), so you may want to give those a try
plus they give you free picks and a polishing cloth with your orders

The Internet is your friend...and a reliable guitar strings dealer. Get' em by the box - you'll save a few $$ & have plenty of extra sets on hand.

I use Ernie Ball hybrids on all my Strats. If the tension is to tight, the neck isn't at the right angle. Try shimming the neck and see how that works. Neck angle can make or break a Fender!

I did that (it has the micro-tilt function), but I did that after I took off the 10's. Should I have tilted it towards the front with the 10's to get them feeling looser? If that's the case I wouldn't even bother, because I don't want to sacrifice the action....

Everything is feeling and sounding really good right now though, matt!!!

Re: Question for strat users, regarding string gauge

I was thinking, what about a reverse headstock Strat? In a normal Strat, the unwounds run the longest distance, inherently giving them a lot of tension. Though I never liked the look of the Strat headstock the wrong way round

If you think this is stupid, flame away lol

Re: Question for strat users, regarding string gauge

I have .010 on one strat and it's awesome. I have .009's on 2 other strats. One is ok but the other has fret buzz city. New .010 going on soon. To me there is a clear difference in tone between .009 and .010's. For a strat I think .009's are just 2 slinky. I don't want my strats sounding like a banjo.

What tuning do you play in? My strat sounds nothing like a banjo.....

Nickel Rockers are the schiznit. I use them (11-50) on my LP but I like EB Power Slinkys (11-48) on my Strat. I don't notice them being hard to bend or anything, they sound good and feel right to me. I think I have a couple of extra sets of R+RM's lying around somewhere and the strat needs restringing. I'll give them another try. It would be nice to not have to buy a different set of strings for every guitar.

Aren't all the Nickel Rockers rollerwound? That's what mine say on the package.

I've never ordered strings from that website. I just might give them a try.

Re: Question for strat users, regarding string gauge

I use the EB Super Slinky .009 to .042 on most of my Strats that I play through the '70 Marshall Super Lead, with Fuzz Face, Uni Vibe, Octavia, and one of my 4 Vintage spec Wah's ,and the Regular Slinky .010 to 046 on the '59 RI Strat that I usually play throuigh my Fender '59 RI Bassman. All tuned to E flat

I used DR too, I always go back to Ernie ball. They are just real consistant, but DR's I would sometimes get a shitty batch....

Ernie Ball (EB)

EB also stands for EPIC BALLS! Just like anyone else who uses them.

Yeah, I said it!

I tried the DR Pure Blues on a strat and liked them OK, but not as much as the GHS Nickel Rocker R+RM set or Ernie Ball Power Slinkys. The wound strings on the DR set had a mushy feel that I just didn't care for at all. I keep coming back to those two brands every time. It's really a toss up - I can use either set and be perfectly happy.

I ordered a set of GHS Pressurewound bass strings from juststrings.com this morning along with some guitar sets. Their prices are better than the big stores! I didn't even know about the rollerwound bass strings. I'm looking forward to giving them a try.

I do that too - 10s on all 3 of my electrics. They don't feel stiff at all after you get used to them. If anything, a lighter gauge starts to feel "wrong".

Same here, except I was using 9's in the 80's and 10's in the 90's. When I got my LP Custom in 1995 was when I switched over to 11's and I use them on my Strat and Les Paul.

If you won't make fun of my playing, here's a short clip I did pretty much with my Strat straight into a Vintage Modern. I did the bass direct in and used drum loops. I've got a lot of pieces of songs like this that I recorded just so I could remember them later. IMO the Strat sounds thicker and heavier with 11's on it.
