Stuck truss rod???

How do you free up a stuck truss rod nut? I went to give it a tweak and the nut won't budge. I don't want to break it or anything so how do I go about freeing it up? The guitar is a '97 and it looks like it's probably never been adjusted.

Re: Stuck truss rod???

I would let some WD40 soak in for a while, then try again.

Before you go at it, just make sure your wrench is a perfect fit. It should free up!

Thanks Mark...I didn't think it would be that simple.

Paint a dot on one of the flats with magic marker, liquid paper, touch up paint, or finger nail polish and only do small adjustments.

Re: Stuck truss rod???

If you have access to military weapons oil (CLP), it works wonders for a truss rod nut. It's great for any metal on metal application. I picked up a couple of bottles of it the last time I ran across someone selling it. I even like the way it smells.

LOL! No, it just smells like guns. Like wiping down a rifle or shotgun after it's been out in the rain. If you've ever used it, you'd remember the smell. Hell, I've known I wasn't right since about my first day of kindergarten.

That great man, thanks for the laugh first thing this morning!

I didn't have time to mess with it yet, sorry guy's, hopefully I'll get it after work today, I had some things come up last night...

Thanks for all the advice, I really thought there would be more to it than that. I'm not near as worried about it now...

Re: Stuck truss rod???

I used some Liquid Wrench on it and let it sit for a while...I heard it break free but now it doesn't do anything. It's completely loose, but won't it tighten up!!!!

Are you saying the nut is spinning, but not getting tighter?
Can you take the nut off and see if it or the rod is stripped?

OMG...that is one of the most memorable smells I have from my youth. Every time I smell it, I am reminded of cleaning the guns after a day of hunting with my dad. Some of the best times of growing up.

What about just regular gun oil? I'm going to have to go buy something else anyway. I don't trust the stuff I used and I'm not even sure I got it on there good. I didn't want to get any on the neck. I'll try it again but it will be this weekend before I have time to do it.

If it doesn't work I'll take it to someone. I'd like a new nut anyway and I'll let them fix the truss rod, too. I don't want to break it.

CLP (Clean - Lubricate - Protect) is different from regular gun oil. You can buy it at big sporting goods retailers. Break Free makes a CLP but I don't think it's exactly like the military stuff. The good stuff will say G96 or G-96 on the bottle. I don't know if it'll really help break it loose or not.

Disclaimer: I'm not recommending that you do this because you can seriously screw up your guitar. If you have a guitar bench you can use the neck rest as a fulcrum and push down on the headstock just enough to get a little back bow in the neck and then try to loosen the nut. That should take a little tension off the rod and make it easier to move. You can snap off the headstock if you get carried away so be careful.

The CLP will keep it moving smoothly once you get it moving.

Thanks for elaborating, RR...I know what to look for now. Since your not sure if it will loosen it or not, I should probably go with something else to break it free, then use the CLP to keep it that way.

It was scary just reading that second part....I don't think I'll be trying that.
