Water Filled Guitar???

I want to build a guitar that is filled with water. Basically, it will have a single cutaway and it's hollow. However, instead of air, it will be filled with water. The body will essentially be a guitar shaped water bottle. How will this concept affect the sound of the guitar?

My guess is that since vibrations don't like to pass through two different materials, some frequencies will be lost and it will have crappy sustain, but will there any other effects?

Re: Water Filled Guitar???

Never thought of that.
Will it be completely full, or some air in it?

Re: Water Filled Guitar???

I remember seeing somewhere that Kirk Hammett has a liquid filled ESP Tele style, but it's not water, it's some kind of oil or something.

edit: found it...

"This very strange electric guitar has a hollow and transparent plexi-glass body which is filled with blue wave machine fluid. It has a rosewood fretboard, a standard ESP neck and a natural headstock. Its body design is an ESP Telecaster model.

As you can see in the picture on the left the blue fluid separates into a blue and a clear one at the bottom when the guitar is not being moved.

Re: Water Filled Guitar???

It's gonna have an opening where you can fill water. This allows you to adjust the amount of water you want in there as it may affect the sound. Like I said, it's basically a guitar shaped wooden water bottle.

Re: Water Filled Guitar???

I would think it woulkd make the guitar's attack bright. a rosewood board may be of benefit here.

air allows its sound to reverberate and water is a STRONG dampener comparatively but, sound does travel longer distances ion water more freely so i would imagine it would slow it down, lower the frq and add "sustain" in a weird way.....man that's going to sound STRANGE. You may need to get cutom would pickups for this thing as well man.

Im thinking that wood and water over time is gonna be nothing but trouble. Wooden hulled boats require constant maintenance. You're gonna have the water on the inside, so to do that kind of maintenance you would have to dis-assemble it.

Re: Water Filled Guitar???

Water is an excellent conductor of sound, but there will be refraction issues at the water-wood interface.
Personally I would use plastic as the vessel and route it into a traditional wooden body.
Maybe put a hydrophone inside the vessel - that could capture some cool sounding shit!
How about a goldfish?

It was a Fender Esquire made especially for the NasH20 project (Nashville flood benefit). I posted it on here ages ago. It's full of water from the Cumberland river flood.

I found the link if you want to read about it.

Fender Lucite Esquire - Cumberland River from Fender Guitars on NASH2O: Flood Relief

I wonder if you could make one with Sea Monkeys in it?

Might be a bit on the heavy side, depending how much water is in it.

Now that has possibilities. You could rig a B-bender and hook up a drinking tube to it like the astronauts use or something. If your solos just aren't getting that Slash toan, a couple of tugs on the strap and you are the Cat in the Hat.

LOL It's because it's filled with real flood water! Notice the sediment at the bottom.

It'll be interesting when somebody takes it off the stand and holds it in playing position. It'll look like a low-rent snow globe. I wonder how much stuff is still living in that water? We looked at at shit like that in high school biology class.

Not strictly true. My Dan Armstrong has a lovely vibrant, loud and bright acoustic sound. And a great full tone with plenty of detail and definition to it when amplified, so perspex does impart a certain characteristc.

Re: Water Filled Guitar???

According to wikipedia, sound travels about 4 times faster in water than it does in air, but I'm not sure if this would affect any aspect of the sound... Although I think the water would possibly absorb more of the vibrations.

Also the guitar would be heavier than a conventional guitar because water is more dense than mahogany...
