1957 Les Paul Darkback Goldtop VOS or 1958 Les Paul Standard VOS?
I have been saving money for awhile and have found many guitars to choose from in the Gibson Les Paul family. I have narrowed my choices down to either a Gibson Custom Shop 1957 Les Paul Goldtop Darkback VOS or a Gibson Custom Shop 1958 Les Paul Standard VOS. They both cost $3100 and I have wanted both of them for many years.Which one do you guys think I should get? Thank-you in advance...

The R7 should be cheaper than that, certainly cheaper than an R8.
I have an R7 goldtop...it is a great guitar. The best guitar for the money, I think, but I paid less than $2000 for mine. Generally speaking, they will both have fairly fat necks. Depending on where you live, you should be able to get either of them cheaper than $3100. |

I'm from Norway myself, and $3100 for the R7 is the same as "used guitar". It's in fact fairly cheap. Usually they go for around$3500-3600 used. I bought a used 2007 Les Paul Standard resently for $2000, and that was the cheapest Gibson I've ever bought. You know, everything in Norway is expensive... The in store price for a new Standard is around $5000, but they sell them for around $3100 The in store price for a Custom Shop is from $3900-9600 depending on what model you want. The 1959 and 1960 reissues are the most expensive ones. There is an original 1960 Custom up for sale here in Norway right now (see link). It cost $117200 Gibson Les Paul Custom fra 1960! | FINN torget Have a look at those other guitars as well. If you want to know the prices just do like this: Price for guitar in Norwegian crowners/ 5,12= price in dollars. One dollar is now worth 5,12 NKR here in Norway. Anyone fainted yet? ![]() |

Btw, the Darkback Goldtop is a lot more expensive than the one with the "standard" back. The cheapest new Darkback I've seen here, if you buy via the net, cost around $5450
If I only was a millionaire... |

Re: 1957 Les Paul Darkback Goldtop VOS or 1958 Les Paul Standard VOS?
I love my 2006 '58 reissue. I have grown to appreciate goldtops the more I've been exposed to them, but I still prefer a sunburst finish. It's really a matter of personal tastes. The R7 and R8 are pretty much the same guitar. One other option in the same price range is the Guitar Center 1960 plaintop reissue. A lot of people like those, too.
