Today, I noticed an unusual amount of noise coming from the presence knob on my amp. I have to "jiggle" the knob to get rid of a loud hum sound. I heard that this knob is naturally noisy but I just recently noticed the hummm. Could the knob be loose or just need of replacement? The pot has been scratchy for awhile but I didn't do anything because I thought it was normal. I recently went through the amp to check it all out and everything looked good so I am confused...

Marshall JCM 800 Master Model 50w Mk 2 Lead.

OK, new to the forums, not sure if this is the right place for this thread but here goes.

So, I bought this JCM 800 from a guy on Ebay. The guy lists this amp as a "Marshall 2204 JCM 800 50w head". By the way I am not very knowledgeable about the technical side of amps, I wanted an all original working vintage JCM 800 and had some gear head friends of mine help me figure out which model I want. The amp we come up with is a vintage 50w JCM 800 with vertical inputs, and this is exactly what I find on Ebay. I ask the seller about how well the amp works, if it has all the important original parts, and if it has been modded at all. Apparently the amp works fine, all original, no mods...So I buy it.

Here is my dilemma...At this point I had owned the amp for about a week, I am jamming with my band and I suddenly smell burning plastic coming from the 800. I immediately turn he thing off and refused to turn it back on til a repair man sees it.

I take it to a guy in Colorado. This guy is like the exclusive amp repair guy for this big time studio in Ft. Collins, CO. that I interned at, so I figure hes reliable. I tell him the problem and I also ask him if he can figure out if the insides of the amp look all original and if it really didn't have any mods, because I don't really know how to tell. He fixes it up and says it looks all orignal, no mods.

Now that I have the amp back I notice that the Treble knob seems very strange. This is how it works: When I turn the knob DOWN it seems to BOOST the the higher frequencies and DRASTICALLY boost the volume. The exact opposite happens as I turn the knob UP. Does that sound right at all??
SO what I do is have my gear head friend take a look at the amp, I don't know what exactly he is talking about but he says "The treble pot is sitting farther back than all of the other pots". This gear head friend also says the 800 looks like someone may have been trying to install some mod.

All I want is for the insides of this amp to be like factory default...what can I do?? does the "pot" thing sound weird to anyone else??

Also I'm looking at the back of the amp now and it almost looks like it says "Model: 2206"

If you guys could help me I would like to know what year the amp was made and whether it is a 2204 or 2206. Also what can I do to get this thing to factory default without some repair guy jerking me around? I feel ripped off, the repair guy said the amp is back to normal and it's not. If it will help I will open the 800 up, take some pictures, and post em up here. Sorry about the long read, thanks for reading though.

Here are the specs:
Marshall JCM 800 Master Model 50w Mk 2
Serial number S/A: 42681R
It has vertical inputs
Need anymore info? Let me know.

*edit* just found the workbench, I'll re-post this there, sorry.

I am in the middle of the decision of purchasing a Holy Grail reverb pedal to be used on a Marshall 1987x reissue with no effects loop. I really like the plate and spring vintage reverb sound.

Should i leave my amp stock with no effects loop and place the EH Holy Grail in front?

hey, I'm new to the forum...but I swear, just by reading through the threads for the past 5 hours, I can tell I'll be learning a lot.

I've been playing out of a '91 JCM 900 for about 8 years now. I'm thinking its time for me to buy my first vintage. I'm looking at a '77 JMP MKII Master Model Lead. most likely the 50 watt head.

One thing I'm trying to figure out is what sort of difference there is between the "Lead" version and the "Super Lead"...I'm dying to get some input. Thanks

I'm new to Marshalls (I have a Reinhardt Fat Albert, a TW Rocket clone, and a Carol-Ann OD2 100), and I have the opportunity to purchase a 1971 PTP Super Lead 100w with laydown transformer. I've attached thumbnails of it; I was wondering why it doesn't have "JMP" on the front panel and was told it was possibly a Canadian version. Can someone take a look at the photos and perhaps either confirm or unconfirm this...Do all 71s have "JMP" on them?
Any help to this newbie is much appreciated. It looks like the real deal, but I want to be sure before I spend the money.

I purchased what was advertised as a Mark IIC+ on ebay last month. He stated that it was a Mark IIC, with a Mark IIC+ PCB installed into it. After trying to sell it, I had people asking me to check the transformer numbers, and the letter coding... I pulled the chassis out, to find that the amps letter code "DRG" was changed to "HRG"! I then began a numbers search on the OT coding... What I found out was that Mr. Beard (calls himself "Silverwulf" on The Boogie Board. He is "new-world-man 2112" on ebay) had the amp converted from a Simul-Class Mark IIC, to a 60/100 watt - with a MESA MARK III OUTPUT TRANSFORMER! Also - I spoke with Mike B. at MESA, and he said that there's NO WAY that the amp had a Mark IIC+ PCB installed! All reverb equipped Mark IIC amps had a "C+ modded" Mark IIC PCB. Nice... After asking him why he wasn't truthful about the amps history - he said; "You didn't ask"! I requested a refund on the amp, and he refused. I even have his email where he admits that he knew about the OT swap! Here is his ebay listing:
Mesa Mark IIC+ 1X12 Combo w/Mesa EV12L 200W Speaker! - eBay (item 220493064074 end time Oct-10-09 22:24:49 PDT) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220493064074&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_500wt_1182)

Here is his ebay reply after I requested a refund... He admits to knowing about the OT swap also:
Hey man! It's easiest to just email me directly, I can respond quicker during the day that way (silverwulf2@yahoo.com). I have no clue what OT it has, I just know it has the 105 PT. Even if it has a 562100, it's the exact same spec as the IIC 100W transformer. In fact, Hetfield has had a 562100 in his IIC+ "Crunch Berries" since the latter part of the "Justice" tour because he blew out the original (Kirk has one in one of his IIC+ also). The amp was an upgrade done by Mike B who replaced the board. It started life as a IIC, Simul and was converted to a IIC+, 100W. The conversion to 100W required Mike to swap the OT, which I assumed was the IIC+ tranny. The chassis markings would be changed accordingly. Even if it does have a 562100, it's the same thing, different part #. No one worked on that amp other than Mesa, and Mike B in particular. It's a IIC+ through and through.
- new-world-man-2112

This guy is as bad as a gear thief! All you need to do, is to take one look at the listing, and then read his email... No mention of any OT swap at all! No mention of it originally being a Simul-Class either. Plus, he lied about the "C+ PCB upgrade"! I paid $2,300.00 for this amp - and Mr. Beard thinks I'm the asshole? I would NEVER had paid $2,300.00 for this amp - no way! I would have purchased a Mark IIC Simul-Class for around $1,600.00 and then had Mike B. do a C+ upgrade.

To Super Bass players + others w/ experience

Hi! I just wondered if any of you fellow Super Bass players out there (or others) would care to answer my question. It has to do with the difference between Channel I and II compared to Channel I and II on Super Leads.

I have a 1973 100W Super Bass which I unfortunately haven't been able to play as much I like, since it's in another part of the country right now, but when I play it I find myself mostly plugged into the upper right jack (Channel II? Can't really remember now.) My experience is that this channel has more treble and presence than the left input, but this doesn't correspond to what most are saying, stating that the top left input is the treblier. This makes me wonder if there are some irregularities in my amp.

Shortly put:
What is the difference between the left and right inputs in metal face Super Bass amps? And how does these correspond to the inputs of a Super Lead?

Answers greatly appreciated!

Tan JMP head

Hi All,

New guy here... posted this is amp section and got no responces so ill try here.

I picked up a Tan/Fawn color JMP head. The back has MK II in bold block letters. The face has 4 input jacks, 2 volumes, B, M, T, and Presence. The rear of the head has a hand written label for Model which reads 1187 as the model number. There is another label which reads Tested in Jan 1980.

My question is do you know what I have? Is it actually a 1987 JMP? I'm confused by the 1187 number. I'll post the S/N later im at work and the heads at home. Also was the Tan/Fawn color tolex rare or a limited edition? Does the color fall into the time period for the test label?

Thanks guys for any help you can provide.

As I understand it - the only difference between the SL, and SB is a different capacitor somewhere at the input. Does anyone know if this is true? Can I just remove it, or replace it with an alternate cap?

Also... What's the difference between a Mark II Super Lead, and one that just reads "Super Lead"?

Trying to set up my rig in a vintage way. What type of angled cabinet did Jimmy Page used in 1972- 1973 Madison Square Garden concerts? Was it checkered or basket weave? I believe the speakers were Vintage 30īs. Anyone has pictures to share?

Can anyone figure out how Jimmy Page got his reverb using the modded Marshall 1959 SLP with KT88 tubes in 1972 & 1973 live Led Zep concerts?
