A little slice of personal history for those who might be interested...

When I was 9 (in the ancient year of 1983) Def Leppard, and Phil Collen in particular, changed my whole life. Upon seeing the "Photograph" video, I was instantly transformed into a guitar junkie by the sight of that incredibly bizarre space-aged guitar Phil played. As a kid raised on a steady diet of Kiss/Beatles since age 5, I had never seen anything quite like it - the closest was Paul Stanley's Iceman, but that was nowhere NEAR as cool as Phil's guitar to me. I drew that Destroyer on my school notebooks and daydreamed about owning one some day. As crazy as it seems to me now when I think back on it, I even started playing guitar (and eventually making the jump to guitar/amp tech) all because of Phil and his pointy guitar.

Fast forward to 2010, and I'm now a 36 year old jaded punk rocker. I'm looking to buy one last guitar before removing myself from the guitar buying market all together, since with a full time day-job and a full time night job (fixing amps and guitars), I just don't play that much any more. I then discover THIS vintage DT-555 1984 gem on Ed Roman's site. I HAD to have it as a kind of poetic bookend to my playing career. Ed had bought it to take measurements off of in order to produce high-end, built-to-order reproductions of this somewhat iconic guitar. I relieved him of it once he was done copying it, which makes this very guitar a prototype of sorts.

When I got it, it was in BAD shape. The bridge was tarnished and corroded, and none of the holes from the original pseudo-Floyd routing had been filled. A buddy of mine and I filled all the holes and did a quick touch-up on the finish. Also, a new 3/16" full shim was carved for the bridge to elevate it to the level of the original bridge, as the Kahler naturally sits lower than the original Floyd copy did on this axe. The tremolo cavity has also been plugged with a block of wood, so there's nothing under the trem cavity cover anymore. Eventually, I MIGHT re-finish the guitar, but as of now I like it somewhat battered, as I am more apt to play something already dinged up. Anyway, I put a new bridge on it, a new string lock, and fitted it with a new bone nut. Someone had also put gold Gibson bell-knobs on there at some point, so I replaced them with gold Ibanez Sure-Grip IIs. Electronics wise, it had been mauled by someone who had NO idea what they were doing, so I replaced and re-did almost all of the electronics to match Phil's original as much as I could. That's a 70's vintage DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, and the neck and middle pickups are the original Ibanez V-2s, just like on Phil's. The pots are CTS and the tone cap is a Sprague "Orange Drop," which was already in the guitar when I got it. Now, hardware-wise, the only differences I can see between mine and the original are Phil's name inlayed at the 12th fret, the fact that his has the brass version of the Shure-Grip II knobs, and a weird string lock he had that seemed to have 4 bolts (can't find a good picture of that part of his guitar to tell!). Also, I can't be sure if his even HAS the back tremolo route at all, as his was built to order.

Anyway, this is my new baby, and if any of you have info as to how I can make it more like Phil's, or any general constructive info/feedback, please feel free to share - I'd be eternally grateful.

Thanks for taking the time to read that mini-tome if you made it through it, and Rock On, Brothers and Sisters! I guess sometimes, dreams can indeed come true if ya work hard enough and have armloads of patience! :headbanger:

Ok. I have established that nobody in the Mobile, Alabama area sells either Fender SL or XL 150's (which I dearly love) or the Gibson VR series either one. I tried the GHS Boomers, which quite frankly after 2 weeks time continued to be a total piece of untunable shit. So yesterday I bought my first set of d'Addarios. DAYUMN what a difference!. I could get used to this. Totally broke in and holding tune 20 minutes after installing them. If they hold tune overnight, I am in love!!!

I just ended up starting to strip the faded and worn out finish on my Les Paul Special. Man What a Surprise I just did about 3/4's of the back with a heat gun and the sound changed alot. It sounds soo much better it's unreal.
I've never known that the thin paint and nitro was holding back so much tone. Can't wait to strip the hole thing and maybe keep it an oiled finish.

If I were to get a custom itd be white, the standard would be cherry sunburst.

I didnt know where else to post this, seeming its guitar related i thought id put it here...

Have you guys ever had the satisfaction (or however you spell that word) of destorying a guitar? Obviously a crap cheapo one... say a squire or cheap epi... or one of those guitars you have never heard of for a good reason lol...

On wednesday, the one just gone, i was having a jam with my mate who drums, and some of his mates came round to chill out n listen... well one of his friends had a flying V copy (it was a really shit copy and he hated it) sitting in my mates music room for ages... so he decided he wanted to destory it! We went outside and destoryed it with a pick axe in the pouring rain... epic stuff. I would post pics but i dunno how lol... we were gona set it on fire but its abit hard in rain and we couldnt find any petrol lol

A Gibson in the garbage??

Yup!
..and rightly so, this thing is pretty knackered.

Looks like the headstock has been broken and repaired at least twice, the frets are toast, and it has been refinished (with a heavy hand) at least once.

Nonetheless, it could be a fun restoration project. First and foremost, I plan to clean up the original glue joint to see if I can get the pieces to line up nicely. I may need to rout the sides of the repair, but we shall see.

Anyone know what model this was? The original serial number is almost gone, but might be 811836. The sides appear to be curly maple while the neck is flame maple with a rosewood board. Tuners are German made with the G logo on them (Schaller-made for Gibson?)

What should the original bridge look like? This one looks pretty hokey.. Also - will the smokey musk and mouse nest give it that AFD tone? :laugh2:
